7string Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Well after some dead ends, I finally managed to swap my ACG 9 string (which I was finding physically painful to play!) for a Sei fretless. Kudos goes to Binky_Bass for his great efforts above and boeyond the call of duty to complete this exchange. So here's the new addition to the sonic armoury! Sei Flamboyant 6 string fretless Spec: Construction: Neck through Neck: Maple/wenge Body: Ash wings with walnut top Fingerboard: Ebony. Unlined fretless with side dots with blue LEDS. Pickups: Lightwave. Controls: Volume, bass cut/boost, mid, mid cut-boost, ice tone (I think!) It plays effortlessly and has a large array of sounds. The bottom end is like a big pillow! Just a beautiful instrument which I'm extremely proud to own. Quote
BigRedX Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Oh Lightwaves... Fantastic pickup IMO. The only ones where you find yourself needing to roll off some bass. Quote
7string Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Yeah the bottom end really works on this. Difficult for me to describe, but it's a fretless with more of everything. Okay, there's always the mwah factor, and this has a huge amount of that, but this sounds has a lot of depth to it. I haven't played a bass with Lightwaves before but am mightily impressed. This bass has a sound completely different to my other fretlesses. Quote
BigRedX Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 7string, How are you finding the Ice-tone control? I have a Lightwave Sabre A bass (with a chambered upper body) and because of the rather physical way I play, I found anything over a quarter on the Ice-tone volume introduced too much handling noise into the sound. Because my Lightwave is only a 4-string, I've been contemplating trading it for a 5-string version and was wondering if a solid body might actually help with my problem. Quote

jc_riffs Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Afternoon all. Just managed to get myself a Sei jazz 5 from a fellow basschatter. It has Kent Armstrong hand wound humbuckers on at the mo with east pre. Anyone got any suggestion on a suitable replacement pickup arrangement for these. Awesome bass already just after a different sound. Cheers Jc Quote

Cheers Jc
My Sei Jazz fretless has Nordstrand MM & J pickups with a tweaked J-Retro (with MM frequencies) - the thing still astounds me with its sound. It's the best-sounding bass I own by a long shot. I'd recommend that setup to anyone. Quote
fluffo Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 I have done a trade with jc riffs for his sei jazz 5, It had been wired out of phase hence it was sounding terrible. As mentioned it has kent armstrong hand wound soaps but the sp2 east obviously lacks mid ect. I want to avoid the east preamps as I have one in my other jazz, so I want people thoughts on other preamps (3 band) Aguilar OB3 ,gis your thoughts boyz. Quote
4000 Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 My Flamboyant has KAs with a Schack pre and IMO it could be the best sounding Sei I've owned; I think it's really down to the KAs, but it seems a very nice match. Quote

When he used that bass with Soul 2 Soul live on Jools I thought it was the possibly the best clean bass sound I've ever heard on the telly; deep, rich and smooth. Quote
