Most definitely, for me anyway. The action on my main bass is very high, which very much influenced my playing style; going for a very upright bass-y sound. It also helped me choose my genre of choice; Jazz. Seeing as I have a natural swing to my playing, it makes sense. I guess I developed my swing from my instrument too, as I never played with a swing prior to getting my main bass.
