NancyJohnson
Why does the UK even bother entering/bankrolling this and who in their right mind would take up the potentially career ending chalice of representing this country?
Doctor J
You shouldn’t complain, though, the UK is in a cabal of five or six countries which don’t have to pre-qualify and always get on the main show regardless of how weak the song is. It wasn’t a great song, let’s be fair. There were similar sized shows on Tuesday and Thursday in order for everyone else to attempt to get onto the bill for the main show. Around 40 whittled down to 20? Is coming last on the main show worse than not even making the cut? Imagine spending the time and money and not even getting through to the main show. Then Germany, another who don’t have to pre-qualify didn’t get a single public vote. Ouch. I actually enjoyed the whole thing. The Czech Republic had a genuinely catchy, decent pop song. Iceland, BDSM schtick aside, did something musically different from the usual bland club fare and holding up Palestine scarves took some balls. One thing we can be sure of is that Madonna’s voice is shot and that new song is dreadful. She also had Palestinian flags feature in her performance, though, there’s still some fight in her. Never been a Madonna fan (IMO she even ruined American Pie), but according to the BBC she had dancers wearing both Israeli and Palestinian flags on their costumes. Steve Browning
Having the two flags was hardly edgy, an easy tap into an open goal really. Everything about her performance was dire.

visog
Not sure I heard a single bar of good music in the whole show, including Madonna's 'performance'.

NancyJohnson
In my defence, while I've watched the whole thing previously, last night I only turned on and watched the last two or three songs and turned off during Madonna's performance. I went up to bed (long day) and put Radio 2 on, but was asleep before I heard a single vote. I woke this morning to hear the UK had come last and did let out a chuckle. Jazzmaster62
Isn't this why we voted Brexit? 1
chris_b
Madonna's a chancer. If we ignore her she might go away. This isn't a competition about "good music", whatever that is. It isn't my taste so I don't watch it. Any music is good if it is popular enough and with the audience figures this show gets it passes the good test on every level. We've been laughing at and demeaning the Eurovision contest for 30 years. With the UK press coverage and the BBC's use of Wogan and Norton to insult our European neighbours, it's hardly surprising they take their revenge and we don't do well. Our collective arrogance is a big problem across the board, but if we actually start treating this competition, and the other participants, with some respect we might be in a position to win in when the bad memories we've created have faded, say in another 30 years.
Les
I suppose it is what it is but the production of the whole thing always impresses me.
KevB
As long as you realise that the voting doesn't really have anything to do with music then it's just another show and enjoy it or not for what it is. After being an occupying force in countries close politically to some taking part and now the Brexit vote being another nail in the coffin, it just means we don't get anything worthwhile from the public vote either. If we enter an average song we will come last. If we enter a good song we might scrape second from last and if we entered an outstanding song we might get 3rd-5th from last. Withdraw from it and the money that goes with it and invest that money in home grown talent getting a leg up in the business or maintaining more available venues for them to perform at. There must be a load more deserving music related projects here that could use extra investment than Eurovision.
oldslapper
It’s not really a song contest though is it? If it were, you’d have to do away with the visual gimmicks which, if loud and glittery enough, can distract one’s attention away from judging the melody or prosody, if you understand the language being sung. It’s just a bit o’ Saturday night TV in the category of “Entertainment”. Personally I went out into the garden to stick needles up my finger nails as that was more appealing than watching the programme. But “each to their own” ‘n all that. Sounds like flag sellers did well out of it though? Good for them! Edited May 19, 2019 by oldslapper

I gather we don't have to host it next year then. Nice (I will have to admit that if I hadn't been gigging I would have probably watched it all the same. I don't mind an evening of cheesiness if that's how you approach it)
lowdown
I thought the Albanian entry was decent. Although the ending seemed to go a bit wonky (she did recover though).
dlloyd
The whole thing is embarrassing and idiotic. I never miss it. Special mention for Australia... hitting every note (and smiling) while being swung around insanely on a 20 foot pole?
Leonard Smalls
It would have all been a lot better if Australia had been represented by King Gizzard, Germany by Rammstein, UK by Fat White Family, Ireland by Girlband etc. That would have freaked out all those people who actually like the exceptionally square wail-fest that it is!
Barking Spiders
Once, like TOTP in the 70s and 80s, there was a goodly amount of cheesy fun to laff at, you know, entries from the Netherlands or Luxembourg that went ' she went ning nang nong with a bang tiddle bong' . Now it's all sensitive young men with well groomed facial hair yearning earnestly into the camera or East European porno starlets howling at the top of their lungs in a Mariah Carey stylee. Our kids like this kind of tosh so I turned the TV off after 9 episodes of torture finishing with another dismal effort from the UK.

That's one of the most bizarre performances I've ever seen, topped only by the audience's attempt to clap in time😳 Didn't see the show so off to weed out Madge's performance on YouTube. B L O O D Y H E L L just heard it. She needs to lay off the Capstan full strength. Where's Cliff and Lulu when you need them?
