Scott Whitley's Bass Vlog #2 - Why aren't YOU sharing your work online?

Good morning all!

After 8 fun and successful years as a YouTube content creator, I have started to intersperse my regular bass lessons with a new vlog series where I talk more about concepts and issues surrounding  our careers as bass players.

Here's episode 2 of my new vlog series in which I hope to inspire others to get sharing their own work online.  Give it a watch and let me know your thoughts on the subject - are you already sharing your content?  Can you relate to the fears I talk about?

I hope this video inspires you to start sharing your conent online,

Scott.

Maybe they could be posted here:

https://www.basschat.co.uk/forum/26-tutors-available/

or

https://www.basschat.co.uk/forum/31-theory-and-technique/

or have a separate section themselves?

I think a seperate section would be a great idea.  Went to post in https://www.basschat.co.uk/forum/31-theory-and-technique/ but thought it was a lot more 'general discussion'.

Fair comment - will take that onboard. 🙂

It's probably just me and my short attention span, and the fact I'm quite busy. I started watching, then fast-forwarded a little, just in time to see you take a swig of coffee. I'd just make it shorter, and to the point. I watch quite a few of Janek's vlogs, his seem more structured, yet at the same time informal.

Firstly I like your playing and you can clearly 'walk the walk' - plus I like the fact that you play live with real bands and can be seen touring from time to time

As regards a video format, its hard in a crowded market to stand out. But to have something meaningful to say - I feel that your best bet is to keep it about your strengths - working as a pro player and talk about this, warts and all and and possibly pad it with tips and real world experiences of doing what many others can't.

Best of luck to you.

Hey Scott

The first thing I'd like to say is, good on you for following through with your idea.

I think you genuinely want honest feedback and I'm a huge advocate for giving and receiving feedback as one the best ways to improve at anything.

I've treated your videos the same as I would any new YouTube content and hope my comments are taken in the spirit that they're intended.

I tried to watch both your videos/vlogs, but the first one... sorry, I only managed about 5 minutes or so. I just felt the first 2 minutes of you sat in the car in the rain, then getting your bike off the car to then being sat on a wall were all a bit pointless and felt like filler. I started clockwatching and getting impatient after about a minute, so by the time you'd starting talking about your wife at around 5 minutes in, I'm afraid to say I lost interest and bailed.

Onto the 2nd video. I was feeling a bit guilty about bailing on the first one, so was determined to see this one through to the end, which I did.

I feel like the first 20 minutes could have been condensed into just a couple of minutes. It took the best part of the video to get to the point, and unfortunately, once you'd got there it was a bit underwhelming.

The biggest thing I felt that was missing was bass related content. If I watch a YouTube channel with Bass in the title, the expectation is that's what I'm going to hear about, especially when the content provider is a bona-fide gigging bassist who builds his own basses(!!!). I mean, you've got stuff to say that I'm gonna be interested in! But, 25 minutes of a bloke saying, I've done a video, you should too, was just disappointing unfortunately, simply because my expectation was so high.

I dont mind long format, if I'm doing a long drive or something I actively seek them out. I'll often watch/listen to 1,2 & 3 hours podcasts or vlogs. It just needs to be engaging right off the bat (I'd personally dispense with the intro bits, walking around town or whatever) and cover subjects you know deeply. With all the respect in the world, this is your 2nd vlog and its all about how more people should do vlogs..?

The other thing I'd say is, make it so it translates as a podcast. The beauty of them is, you can listen when you're doing something else. A dedicated vlog requires the audience to focus all their attention on it. Having both formats gives the audience options and will also make sure you focus the content to keep it tight and constantly moving (no sipping from mugs or arty establishing shots).

All the best with it and good luck! 👍🏻

Thanks for the feedback.  Lots of constructive stuff there.  I must make the point, though that I wasn't trying at all to teach anyone how to vlog, I was hoping to inspire people to have a go at sharing their talents online.  It's something I've been doing for about 8 years and have about 16,300 YouTube subscribers and was just trying to encourage folk they should go for it.

Ahh fair play, I didn't realise that. I just assumed these were your first & second vlogs. Apologies

Not at all! 🙂  I knew posting them on here was like throwing myself into the bear-pit, rather than the comfy confines of my YouTube subscribers lol.  It's actually been really grounding and constructive to read the comments.

I've editied my original post to give a little more context for anyone who hasn't read it yet.

Thanks again.

+1 on this.  Have seen a few of these threads posted recently and was thinking that a forum sub-section where BC'ers can post and promote their Online Content would be useful to help keep the General Discussion chann clear.

Unfortunately, if you really want to promote your work, whether it's a single/album/video release or a podcast/blog/vlog, you are going to get far more views if you post it here rather than in one of the specialised forums that are only visited by a few people.

Hi Scott some good and fair comments I must admit when I click onto a video I usually see how long it is and if it doesn't grab me within a few minutes I tend not to bother but Respect to you for trying to put your views and bass playing expertise out there...reason I don't or won't is because i'm pretty average player and the criticism would destroy my lack of confidence even more lol....keep up the good work but my advice would be keep 'em short and to the point, all the best.
