Stingray5 Posted May 26, 2019 Share Posted May 26, 2019 (edited) Over the years my Stingray5 has acquired a bit of mojo, some nicks and knocks plus some extra wear and 'buckle rash' on the rear. Certainly not intentional, of course, but it did get me wondering about other Basschatters instruments that have picked up their own mojo. Don't be shy, show us some genuine mojo! Please note: No 'reliced' instruments. GENUINE mojo only, please. Acquired naturally, whether by yourself or from previous owner(s). Current or previously-owned instruments. From December 1984 to the middle of 1993, it was essentially my only fretted bass and came with me to gigs, sessions, tours throughout the busiest time of my music career. It's been with me all over the UK and as far afield as the Middle East. That's the original Earth strap still on there too! Thing is, Steinbergers are pretty tough really, EMG pickups slightly less so... Yes, I sometimes dig in and my slap technique is in the Louis Johnson mould. And yes, it appears that a human thumb, used to anchor against the pickup can wear down carbon fibre! Yep, she's a beaut, fer sure! I've jammed with it, recorded, gigged it and on my last gig with the Johnsons I threw it about 20' across a stage. That last chorus was just shouting, sometimes I'd play through it, sometimes not. Terrible venue, twenty or thirty in, prospect of a two hour ride home. Spur of the moment thing. The bass was already off and it just seemed apt at the time. I have this slow motion vision of it flying through the air and it clattering into the bottom of the drums. Originally sunburst but already refinished when I bought it (Boogie Music, Denmark St / Charing cross road 1990) It was up for £450 I think. It was bought brand new in 89 from Nova Guitar Centre in Guildford and has seen 30 years of hard gigging including TV, tours, radio sessions etc. Pickups are changed to Barts and the pickguard has been changed from white to the black but apart from that it is all original. It is the best sounding and playing bass I have ever had and will never leave me. It has been with me for my entire music career and has been my main working bass. All the mojo is genuine wear and tear apart from the two engravements. The GB is my dads initials who bought the bass for me and who died a couple of months before I signed my record deal. The MB 4 LG is my initials and the initials of Lisa Germano, the violinist who I fancied when I was younger. Anyhoo, I have owned this since 1999 and despite being lucky enough to own 2 Sadowskys and 2 Vigiers, this is still my ‘go to’ bass. Scratch plate was cut in half by a previous owner. I think this was for easy access to fix the jack connection as when I got it the wiring was horrendous. 14 year old me did a resoldering job in 2000 and I haven’t needed to look at it since. The bass was in almost faultless condition when I got it apart from the scratch plate issue. As a result most of the mojo is mine. Lots of gigs, lots of rehearsals, lots of ‘why didn’t I put it in a hard case?’ gig bag travel dings. The neck lacquer started to come off 10 years ago. I had it treated a bit to stop the whole thing coming off but now and again another bit will flake off in the middle of a song. To be fair I didn’t change the strings until I was 15 and then I didn’t change them again until I was 22. I was using flatwounds but even so...
