Bassalarky
I was involved in a fair bit of 'world music' in the 90's but I've never seen one of those!

itu
Simpler and an actual bass would be the Neuser Claudia (or Clawhammer or even Clawbass). Have once seen in real life and few photos. Very rare, one was sold in Sweden around a year ago. The seller claims that under ten were made. https://www.talkbass.com/threads/in-praise-of-weird-looking-basses.1095757/page-127 https://pratabas.se/viewtopic.php?t=85002
leftybassman392
It's a US company. Found it by chance while surfing around YouTube and wondered if anybody had seen one up close. It's been around a few years apparently so I'm a bit surprised I haven't noticed it before. Superficially it seems to cover very similar ground to the Chapman Stick, but I'm not so sure. First off it sounds quite different IMHO. Secondly the playing technique looks different; it's more of a guitar/piano hybrid, whereas the Stick is essentially a modified guitar. Cosmo Valdemar
What a timely thread! A video of a guy playing one of these popped up on Facebook the other day, fascinated me and then promptly disappeared. I was wondering what it was called. Cato
Apparently Stevie Wonder is a fan.

It's almost like a Hohner Clavinet without the key mechanism, which would explain why Stevie Wonder is into it.
charic
There were a few videos a fair while ago of Jordan Rudess playing one, I'll see if I can find them

Something I find interesting is that runs seem to be done across the instrument with very little movement along the strings. I assume it's to do with string pitches being a tone apart rather than a fourth. Edited June 20, 2019 by leftybassman392
