Could imagine it might be a form of reverse snobbery for some punks, like "we need an expensive guitar as much as we need interesting chords!" To be honest I think it stems a lot - certainly with one of the bands - to the amount of beer that gets chucked at them when they’re playing. Why get an expensive bass drenched.
