ajh8545
Anybody know recommend pedals and settings to get the bass sounds used on Don't Stop Believin by Journey and Black Velvet by Alanna Myles?
fretmeister
Black Velvet is just the back pickup on a jazz. Bass and mids boosted, treble turned down a bit. I think the original was recorded on a fretless, but a fretted is close enough. Edited July 8, 2019 by fretmeister

I used to play those in several cover bands without pedals. Edit for correction. Edited July 8, 2019 by chris_b
fretmeister
Really? It sounds like a fretless to me!
fretmeister
Make sure you play it in E Flat though. If your guitarist wants it in E - sack him and get a better player.
BigRedX
Black Velvet is definitely synth. Very well programmed for both the sound and the "performance" but if you know what to listen for it is very obviously synth. Don't Stop Believing might have some real bass guitar in there but if there is it's as a backing for the piano and synth sounds that are at the forefront of the bass line. chris_b
After a little searching I've found a Talkbass post from the guy who knows. . . . I can confirm 100% that the bass on Black Velvet is a sample of a fretless bass. It was played by the producer Dave Tyson. I believe it was an Akai S900 Sampler. How can I be sure? I played the bass guitar on the record, appeared in several videos and toured with Alannah in the late 80's. BTW the bass referred to in the Black Velvet video is a foam green Warwick -- that bass was not used in the recording. On stage I used a hip shot on the E string to deal with Eb issue. redbandit599
Don't Stop Believing - just stick some chorus in to bring out a bit of warble in those higher little fills. Phaser of Flanger would probably do the trick too with a bit of fettling.
ajh8545
Thanks guys - I don't feel too bad about trying to get near to the sounds now ! It sounded like a 5 string to me but I'm new at these effects.
paul_5
My ears are telling me that ‘Don’t stop believing’ is fretless with a touch of overdrive.
