Toby E Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 Hi guys. I’m a relatively new to bass. I’ve just bought a squire bronco short scale and I noticed that the nut appears to be higher towards the lower strings. I’m not sure if I’m just imagining this, but it seems as if the neck and frets are curving to left slightly more around the first fret and then curving to the right at the higher frets closer to the bridge. Apologies if the pictures are bad but I was just wandering if this is considered normal ? Am I nit picking or could there be an issue with the neck or frets. Thanks for any help Quote
Christine Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 (edited) The nut is higher towards the bass side, the nut slots need to be abut half the thickness of the strings so by default it gets higher there. It does look like it could do with a bit of tweaking looking at the pictures. Have a google at bass setup and go through that Edited July 11, 2019 by Christine Quote
BreadBin Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 (edited) It doesn't look bad, this is twisted! Edited July 11, 2019 by BreadBin Quote
Stub Mandrel Posted July 11, 2019 Posted July 11, 2019 It supposed to be like in the original post, although some nuts are the same height right across so the smaller strings appear to sit deeper in the slots. Quote
Andyjr1515 Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 Looks normal to me. The amplitude of the vibration of the lower strings is much greater than the higher strings and so the nut slots need to be proportionately higher to prevent buzzing on the first fret when playing on the open strings. Quote
Hobbayne Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 As said above, It probably needs no more than a professional setup. Those 2x2 bridge saddles can be rather tricky to intonate both strings accurately. Quote
Tjhooker Posted July 12, 2019 Posted July 12, 2019 Is it buzzing or fretting out on the high frets or hard to play / fret in 1st position ? If not maybe don’t worry .. i had similar issues as this .. replaced the nut and that is sorted but still have some issues at the other end where the neck is twisted. I. Shimmed the neck and that has helped a little but it is not perfect... but don’t want to spend a fortune getting the neck reshaped / refretted. I don’t go up that end much 🙂 Quote
