police squad Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 (edited) Currently learning relax for my 80s duo, The first video I clicked was this performance. About 3.13 in, Lemmy appears, playing a telecaster. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEBXuhqVSws oops, I didn't realise she was that unclothed Edited July 15, 2019 by police squad 2 Quote
Shaggy Posted July 15, 2019 Posted July 15, 2019 (edited) Great song, great Trevor Horn production, probably the worst bass miming ever! Missed Lemmy (distracted by the lady) - I'll have to watch it again...... He did pop up everywhere in those days mind, usually on Tiswas Edited July 15, 2019 by Shaggy 1 Quote

police squad Posted July 17, 2019 Author Posted July 17, 2019 I'll have to start singing custard creams, and see if anybody notices (normally they dont) 1 1 Quote
nige1968 Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 (edited) Just to stray moderately back on topic ... a) that Lemmy / stripper cameo has to be the weirdest sequence I've ever seen. Do you suppose the Frankies knew any of that was going to happen? b) isn't that one of the Calm Down Scousers on drums? Edited July 17, 2019 by nige1968 1 2 Quote
V2factoryman Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 Brilliant clip! Wasn't this band put together by Paul Morley to prove that hit music could be "manufactured"? Opened the floodgates. Quote

V2factoryman Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 It must have been one of those urban myths. I can't find anything to support the theory, thanks for clearing that up for me! Quote
BreadBin Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 It may have been the Fairlight and Trevor Horn that spawned such a rumour - it was one of the earliest hits to feature sequenced samples like that. 👍 Quote

According to an interview with Trevor Horn that I heard back then, they were a proper band. The bass player, Mark O’Toole, was quite a busy “slap-bass player”. Horn had to simplify a lot of his lines as part of the production process. Quote
Frank Blank Posted July 17, 2019 Posted July 17, 2019 I remember FGTH rehearsing at Nomis Studios for their TOTP debut, I had to restrain the bass player from the band I was working with so he didn’t stagger in to drunkenly berate Holly & Co for their bad playing, which, tbh, wasn’t that bad, or perhaps we were both rather drunk, not sure. 1 Quote

Norman Watt-Roy played the bass that Horn sampled for 'Relax'. But, yeh, O'Toole was a slap-merchant. Quote
tauzero Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 You could always just watch the original "Relax" and judge for yourselves... 1 Quote
Hellzero Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 Trevor Horn did a terrific work when you hear that original unedited version... But tha are way much worse original versions, like Devo, for example. Thanks Lemmy (who surely must be a god 😁), there were fantastic producers and arrangers by the time. Quote
Soledad Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 (edited) Lemmy... what a top geezer. And does anyone remember that summer of XXXL white tees with black bold caps across the front: all starting 'Frankie says (the first was 'Frankie says Relax', it went from there). Fashion eh?! That was the work of Paul Morley and the ZTT hype machine Edited July 18, 2019 by Soledad Quote
bartelby Posted July 18, 2019 Posted July 18, 2019 They were certainly up on their merch. The 1st album came with a merch order form for things from t-shirts to socks and pants to temporary tattoos Quote
