Cuzzie
Morning all! I have always had a hankering for a 2 P bass as per the Old Fender Elites, always loved a shoreline gold and since getting Geddy’s book of bass as a present - it’s got stronger, so...... Mighty Mite Body. Sanded to infinity to about 1000 grit, mixed stains sanded dry, sanded wet, stains diluted etc and also some rub n buff metallic gold for added depth of colour. Here we currently are..... So that’s my base bass colour - nice seasoned wood. Here we go, like or loathe a relic, (I like them!) I may still try it. White primer, then Shoreline gold, then start to relic back so gold to white to wood in places. Yes - sad dad socks, no I will not do tort! will measure up for a bridge and if there is enough space which there should be, rout a second P cavity, I want to do this, but I still may not.....🤷🏾♂️ I have 2 necks (for this anyway!) a mighty mite neck which is tighter than a gnats chuff in the pocket and a thinner more modern profile, bought second hand but screw holes in the right place, or an unused Allparts neck, pre relic’d, relic brand new Gotoh tuners, and is a nice chunky old school piece of meat. Both maple boards. All parts will require a tiny bit of pocket work to fit. Pick ups I have an EMG GZR and a Wizard Thumper hanging around. If I go double P wizard at the bridge as it’s super hot at about 20k. I have also been chatting to radioshop pick ups (really nice chaps) and I quite fancy one of their 61p’s which may replace the GZR in the sweet spot, or I May use on its own. Electrics (if I go 2 pick up) I do have a Sandberg 2 band EQ and if I got the right pickguard, or drilled another hole it could work, or I stay completely passive pop one of my new fave manufacturers Noll electronics stack potentiometers and make it vol/vol or vol/blend and use a Tonestyler Duo6 (or if one pick up a 6 or 10 if I stay one pick up). Noll do a vol/tone so I could do double stacked knobs. Anyway - current thoughts an progress, got another couple to finish off, but will update this, but hope to finish over the coming months.
rubis
Oh yes, very nice idea I was a bit thrown by the staining at first, but I see what you are going for now! Some pics of the two necks would be nice, but I like a chunky neck, the fatter profile, the better, so I would go for the Allparts and just the single Wizard (which I understand are very good). Traditional, I know, but everyone needs an old school P bass in the toybox. Is that a gold anodised scratchplate as well? Hope it is, I have a real hankering lately, to make a maple necked '57ish P bass with an anodised scratchplate, I'm thinking of a yellowed out LPB or maybe one of the old metallic greens. Reading your thread will not be good for me!
Reggaebass
Nice cuzzie, I’m following with interest 👍
Cuzzie
Yep it’s anodised gold, and very nice, and you are right about possible just having an old school P and that maybe where I go with it. photos from photo stream as they came in. mighty mite allparts If I do the electronics purely passive, maybe vol/vol stack knob then whatever I pop in the sweet spot should still give that old school vibe despite looking different. I have got a refurbed precision with a ‘58 creamery pick up and TI flats! So that is pretty close despite it having a tele style neck on it. I could always stick the mighty mite on it, by I rather like it as is. http://www.radioshoppickups.com/bass-pickups/ it has a sound sample. Yes it’s expensive, but could be the ticket and I like how it sounds. @rubis if I don’t use one of the necks, then if you want one.......I am favouring the chunky one though, as well as being fat, it should give even more thump to the sound
durhamboy
Looking forward to seeing your build progress. I like the idea of double P's and have a couple of P pickups waiting for a Lee Sklar tribute bass. His double P had the pickups located fore and aft of the original P rout as opposed to one in the original position and another back nearer the bridge.
Cuzzie
Cheers for that - good knowledge
Cuzzie
@durhamboy what pick ups do you have awaiting?
durhamboy
I bought two 'Maida Vale' P pickups.(I assume relatively new UK pickup winder, I couldn't find much in the way of feedback or reviews, but his approach interested me, plus his P's are wired for parallel and series.) The output and number of winds sounded about right for what I was looking for. A touch more output than "stock", but not as high as most overwound types. (The pickups have arrived and look to be very nicely built.) Although I find the pickup placement of Lee's P bass interesting, I didn't want active EMG's like his. The Maida Vale passives will be paired with a Noll 2 band EQ circuit with active bypass. Will these pickups will deliver what I looking for? Time will tell I guess.... Hopefully the build will get a start soon, though I need to finish a house renovation. The end is in sight, but if I stop now to build a bass, life would certainly (and justifiably) not be worth living. 😉
Cuzzie
Can’t wait to see yours as well when that hits after/during renovation. Noll electronics I think are a little diamond. If anyone fancies their products - order direct through Klaus Noll on the website, darn site cheaper than distributors
Unknown_User
That's beautifully stained and the gold looks great.

Thanks buddy - still in half a mind as to whether or not leave it and just oil it up and not rout a second P either , but then again - I have always had a hankering for Shoreline gold and a double P bass like the elite but with passive electronics and have bought the spray cans now......! i suppose it would make the thread more interesting to do it! It sounds like you already know the answer as to which direction you want to take it! Are you going to spray a nitro gloss over it?
Cuzzie
I have the Northwest guitars nitro spray, but after relic I think I will need a clear lacquer as well
Unknown_User
D'oh! I get you now. I missed that you were going to relic it back to bare wood. So you're going to relic it first and then put the gloss on? Personally I think it would be hard to cover up the wood as it is, but it should look really unique with what you have planned. I guess it will need a light touch with the relicing to not go through the stain and gold rub and buff too?
Cuzzie
Yep i could oil it a coat or so to help it stay...

Cuzzie
I’m in for double! Next decision make it a welsh dragon with radioshop 61 and wizard Thumper or GZR and Thumper! Coild Be Double Dragon!
Cuzzie
So the idea is white primer - then Shoreline Gold, then drag it behind a car or something and create a relic look . On those Geddy book pictures you can just see some wood poking through. This is obviously an extreme version, but you can see the wood coming through, is what I am thinking so it looks ‘seasoned’
Sidlanir
Double P - yes this was a great idea late in 1983. This is my Fender Elite II Gold Walnut, my first bass I've purchased ....

Cuzzie
Small update Primer undercoat done, great learning experience for when the Gold topcoat goes on. Few drips on the horns from the first time I tried to spray which have been partially sanded back, but I reckon these may become relic areas! Using Northwest guitars nitro spray cans, they seem to be pretty good actually, enjoying using them, and yes they stink - keep well ventilated peeps!
Cuzzie
Oh an on the pick ups, I am genuinely very fond of the Creamery ‘58 pick up, it’s quality. I was in discussions with Jaime about the 65 and it’s difference aside from being a lower output, and he will do a custom if you/I want. I figure i’ll Get the bridge on after spraying, Mark out the bridge P, if I like the look, rout it and then I may get a custom set from him that compliment each other. Cuzzie
Relic has begun...... Heat gun, freezer, wire wool, rocks, keys etc. Having fun and the stained wood comes through as planned trying to leave the bit under the pickguard untouched
