ambient
There’s a pool of songs, same as with jazz bands. Sex on fire, Valerie etc.

Dood
I've depped for many function bands over the years and have to say that, at least, around here, I would say that in ratio, bands play fewer similar songs to each other than differing set lists. Maybe I just got lucky, like the legend of the Phoenix. 2
super al
I managed to avoid Superstition (in E) all my bass playing life until 2015... now played it in the last 3 bands! Love it though, you can't beat a bit of Stevie Wonder.

I love playing Higher & Higher, definitely a great set opener that gets people up on the dancefloor.
stingrayPete1977
We only do two of those, Valerie and Respect but it might not even be the same Respect, ours is the Erasure one. I used to find that the bands that I did deps for did covers from the same artists but different tracks!
interpol52
Search for function bands online. Usually they have set lists on their site, see what are the most common songs you come across. As a starting point though the list in an earlier post is great. They are also really fun songs to play!

I just noticed you said second set, how long do you guys play for?? I have known one of the bands I play with only need that many songs for 2x45 min sets 😄. Mind you we do tend to extend some classic short soul songs, another chorus here and there.
Phil Starr
I was thinking that too, we do two hour long sets and they average about 14 songs each. I too think that looks like a fun set and well worth an evening out, I'd go and have a dance/listen. I wish I could persuade some of the pub bands I've played for, or still do that this is the sort of thing people actually want to hear on a night out. krispn
That’s just a great set of tunes to know even if your not gigging them on a regular basis. Stone Cold Classic’s!

Or both? It's a great function set but wondering how many my band could do with our male singer! We play functions but have more of a rock edge to our band, we are chasing the money!! But our male singer will do "piece of my heart", proud Mary, and "hit the road jack". We occasionally have a female singer come up and do a few numbers with us but now she's gone to uni we will have her less and less.

Or both? Yes, it's really fun to play. We're based Bucks-London; it's nearly all weddings and private functions in the south half of England. We typically do two sets, 45 to 60 minutes each. The set list looks long, but some of the songs are medleys so it's not always the full-length versions. Also there is always contingency - I think we skipped at least three of the above in the end. Respect is the Aretha version. I missed out the first set list for this thread as it's less "standard functions". I'm on upright, and it's swing, Rat Pack, Louis Prima, some latin. Twistin' the Night Away, Jump Jive & Wail, Sway, Reet Petite, ... It's either female lead vocals or female & male. The set list (and keys) move around a bit depending on who is singing on any given night.

Add in: Everybody Needs Somebody, September, Try a Little Tenderness, a couple of 4 Tops numbers a bit of Northern Soul with Do I Love You, Tainted Love and Right Track and we're there. kevin_lindsay
I depped on a covers gig a couple of weeks ago. A lot of the same tracks that have been listed on this thread. I was given a prospective setlist a couple of days prior to playing. On the night, however, there were a few tracks thrown in without any prior knowledge! (Barry White's "the first, the last, my everything", Queen's "Crazy Little Thing", etc.) I had to try and remember how they went. Thankfully, I got through it, but it was pretty unnerving. I was offered a place as the regular bassist if I wanted it, so all was well.
