I use a Boss GT6-B unit which has a MUFF sound within the Distortion/Overdrive menu. It sounds ok but not quite the sound we are looking for! Cheers Justin. Jateca Posted December 21, 2008 Share Posted December 21, 2008 The best results I've had for emulating his synth-like sound (I'm assuming you're talking about Hysteria and Time is running out here) have come from a gated, fuzz face style fuzz (e.g. Zvex Woolly Mammoth) combined with a bit of pre-amp EQ trickery. It's basically a stompbox with settings of differnet synthyness, and you can control all the aspects like the sensitivity. I can get a pretty Hysteria-y sound with my Big Muff, Synth Wah (but fairly subtley) although something to make it a little more springy would help. His sound is really varied though, so there's stuff like Escape, where it's not hugely effected, but then on the flip side, there's Easily, which is really fuzzy,with a really slow Auto-Wah ('least I think so). bobbass4k Posted December 22, 2008 Share Posted December 22, 2008 I can get a perfect TIRO sound with my cherry pop (its quite a gated synthy fuzz) and the envelope filter patch on my xp-100 set heel down, that gives it a really bassy subby kick. Can get a a good hysteria sound with the cherry pop, fuzz intensty higher and tone at mids and some mild chorus, occasionaly use one of the other autowah patches on the xp-100 to give it a synthy edge. The cherry pop does an overall good synthy fuzz, and the envelope filter on the xp-100 set at heel down gives a really great bassy tone, fits in a lot of muse songs Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Either way I know that Chris wolstenholme is a serious pedal freak and owns a multitude which he uses in all sorts of combinations (when recording). Everyone just looks at me gone out when I play it as it sounds so close. I've yet to rtfm tbh but I'll try and figure out the settings for ya. I have to be honest, I'm not that interested in software (possibly with the exception of 1 or 2 examples) and I prefer hardware. Nothing beats racks/sound modules, I used to use a K1 and Roland sound module/TR rack and have yet to hear some of those sounds matched, let alone surpassed. I have been told the Muse sound is cultivated using custom build pedals, just not sure how true this is. Just would love to know if it's done using bass synth or otherwise. Also, I have heard there was a sonic scientist hiding at a few gigs using sequencers and synth stuff, would love to know if this is true!
