Unless you are a speedfreak guitarist most glossy necks will mellow after some use without losing finish. If you use wire wool, STICK MASKING TAPE OVER THE PICKUPS BEFORE DOING SO. Apologies for the caps, but if you don't, you will end up with a "fur" of wire wool fragments on them that you will never completely remove.
