HeavyJay Posted December 24, 2008 Share Posted December 24, 2008 I've got a Squier P-Bass that's been my workhorse back-up bass for years now and I never use it. Never even take it to gigs anymore because my stingray is so reliable. Anyway, I had an idea to add chrome bridge and pickup covers and a thumb rest to it to make it look all retro and maybe start using it a bit in the 50s and 60s band I'm in. I'm okay at putting a shelf up but I've never tried to modify a guitar in any way. Is it worth me having a bash at fitting them myself or should I really go and find a pro? Also, if I'm going to possibly start using it at gigs would it be worth replacing the pickups at the same time? Any and all advice gratefully received. gary mac Posted December 24, 2008 Share Posted December 24, 2008 I recently upgraded a Squier jazz with Wizard pickups, it was a major improvement and money well spent (about £70.00 for the pair). Did the job myself. I managed to balls it up, first attempt, but after seeking advice on here got it sorted. Since carried out a few other moods. It's a great feeling of satisfaction to have completed it sucessfully and not spent out on additional labour costs. Also the best way to get to know the in and outs or the instrument. P.S. It's a good plan to apply screening to the cavities whilst you have it all stripped out. I didn't so will have to remove it all again to do it. Good luck. Gary. When changing the strings on a P-Bass with an ashtray bridge cover, I assume you need to take the cover off. Is this correct? The other thing I thought is that you shouldn't use a bridge cover unless the strings go through the body at the bridge (which mine don't). Mr. Foxen Posted February 4, 2009 Share Posted February 4, 2009 Bridge cover doesn't mind how the strings are strung, unless they are strungg through a badass 2, in which case it won't fit. Get some wide masking tape and put bunches around wherever you are working on the bass, prevents dings and you can mark any holes you are drilling and double check they are in the right place.
