joegarcia Posted December 28, 2008 Posted December 28, 2008 Thinking of upgrading the pickups on my 75RI Jazz but am unsure of which Wizards to go for. Torn between 84's and Hammers. Really intrigued by the Hammers but can't find any info about them on the web. Think they're are a fairly new addition to the line so wondering if anyone has any info/opinions on them? I'm after a pretty heavy sound, big bass and pokey treble. Mostly play fingerstyle and use a fair bit of distortion and fuzz. Would really love some sound clips if possible but fear this is unlikely. joegarcia Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 Anyone? Now thinking I may go for the Seymour Duncan Hot Stacks that are for sale on here as I like the idea of noise canceling stacks. Quote
acidbass Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 FWIW I use the 84's in one of my Jazz Basses, and I think your description of 'big bass and pokey treble' could definitely be achieved with them. Didn't even know that Wizard had a new pickup out, must take a look now! Quote
Jono Bolton Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I use 84s in my MIM Jazz, and it transformed a good bass into a great bass IMO. A wide range of tones to be had, but at the minute my personal fave is the neck pickup up full, and the bridge turned right down, does an excellent P Bass impression. Quote
johnnylager Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I had 84's in me Ged and loved them. I undoubtably would have bought the Hammers if they were out at the time though. Ring Andy @ Wiazrd and have a chat - he'll tell you what's what... Quote

lozbass Posted January 31, 2009 Posted January 31, 2009 I have Wizards in my Sei Jazz (they're custom wounds but installed prior to me purchasing the bass so I don't know the spec). They're big, full-range, articulate and fat - you can get a lot of fingerstyle poke with them too: I've been very impressed. I also had some Seymour Duncan Hot Stacks in a Fender Jazz fretless - to be honest, I wasn't very impressed. They gave a nice even response but were a bit polite and didn't provide a lot of strong poke or growl (the bass had a J-Retro too). I'd strongly advise you to consider Wizard but give Andy a bell to discuss your requirements Quote
