Recommendations for a pickup please!

I play at a local educational trust thing. On electric bass.

They have a couple of doubles (that must be worth at least £7.25 on a good day) and they wish to have a pickup installed on one of them for use with the larger ensembles.

Will be mostly played pizz, but a bit of arco. No slapping / rock-a-billy!

 

Can anyone recommend a pickup for about £150 that would be worth having? Ideally one that can go straight into a regular bass amp without another preamp.

Shadow nanoflex - very impressed with mine. Preamp attaches to the strings.

KNA DB-1. Works for me and is easy to install, straight into amp or PA.

You could consider a cheap stick-on transducer pickup. I wouldn't gig with it professionally but I'd give it a shot for teaching.

SM57 and a sponge to wedge it inbetween the bridge feet.

I used an original Gage Realist for years, with good results. But after seeing Stanley Clarke, I switched to an Underwood, and am much happier with the overall tone and especially, the clarity......

I contacted Armstrong pickups a year or so ago when I wanted a magnetic pickup for my 5 string. They came up with a custom design based on measurements I sent them. Works perfectly. the only issue is figuring a way to fasten it to the end of the fingerboard. Cost me £120.

Don't be put off by the cheap price, these pick-ups are really good.
