Think we need to lighten up around here though - a live music show on TV that gives musicians a chance to showcase what they do and reach potential new audiences is essential if we want to keep developing musical talent.. 

Slowthai is just the sort of artist who's music and performance gets a reaction.. Just like The Stooges, Sex Pistols, Public Enemy etc, etc did in their fay. 

I wouldn't sit and listen to it personally, but it's relevant to his audience and that's what counts. 

I liked a lot of the other stuff on the show too; Little Simz's band were brilliant - really heavy grooves and bass lines - right up my street! 

And Elbow can do no wrong AFAIC.

sometimes, for a bunch of musicians, this place is quick to slag off and slow to listen and say anything positive.

Afraid i'm not with you on that. If i don't enjoy it i'll find it difficult to make a positive comment. I don't like searching for something positive in a band. If its not instantly liked or it has something that i enjoy then its not really for me. 

Maybe i'm the exception and its just me that doesn't appreciate the currents acts on the show ?

Elbow were the only band that i could listen to. Afraid i just can't get into rap style music unless its commercialised for a more general audience.

Majority of acts i saw weren't for popular demand IMO but maybe that's the point of the show these days. I used to enjoy virtually every act on the show but seems to have turned the other way for me.

Each to their own. If its still getting the viewing figures then its working for them.

I'm not quick to slag this crap off, ive never liked it and dont see the attraction. It's like elevator music for the 21st century.

I liked Little Simz… Amazing bass sound! But Elbow do nowt for me.

However, I'm not surprised that a bunch of mainly middle-aged men with a penchant for the music of 50 years ago don't like those young folks with their terrible racket. As my dad said to me in 1978ish when a punk band came on the telly "That's not music, it's just noise! And why do they dress so badly and jump about like they need to go to the toilet?".

Yep, each to their own in terms of which bands/artists we all like... 

Perhaps atypically, I've come to the conclusion that, the older I've got, the list of music I like is much smaller than the list of music I like.. 

And like you, my Dad said the same sort of things to me when I used to watch TOTP growing up in the 70s;  'he /she can't sing ', 'what is he wearing, - looks like a girl ', 'what an' effin racket' etc, etc.. And the more he disliked something, the more I liked it! 

I guess I've just morphed into a slightly more open-minded version of my Dad.

That's why the occasional artists that comes along like Little Simz or Somthai - who I surprised myself by really enjoying - are a bit like anti-ageing pills that stop me from becoming as close-minded as I remember my parents and their friends were..

yes I'm the same, I do like some new stuff (usually when it's similar to the old stuff I like 🙂 ), but I can't be bothered to look any further into it, also, I don't like going to gigs where I'm not very familiar with the band anymore.

I can only speak for myself, but I think that, (along with other people of a certain age, around 40s onwards) it's not necessarily that I don't like it, it's just that I feel like I've seen it all before. So it doesn't feel like it has any real originality, rather, it feels a bit contrived or manufactured. I tend to find it a bit boring and uninspiring, which for me, is the opposite of how I want music to make me feel. 

I completely understand that it's nigh on impossible to invent a new mucial genre, so it's inevitable that new bands will sound/act like those who've gone before. So I don't think it's just a case of noisy band bad, or rapper in pants talentless, it's more that we were there (or thereabouts) at the birth of these genres and bore witness to true innovators create something completely unique.

When punk came out, it was completely new, no one was doing anything like it, no one had seen anything like it. Same with rap. 

Now though, an angry lady with an average, noisy band? Seen that already 40 years ago. 

Angry rapping man dancing in his pants, yeah Mike Patton & Anthony Kiedis were doing that 30 years ago.

Its a bit odd that when we have people post their own music clips on BC almost everyone has something positive to say. Its very rare we hear all negative comments. Maybe its because we expect more from a show that's pushing acts with recording contracts or who have some backing behind them for whatever reason.

yeh, I would go on with that. I mean I liked Michael Kiwanuka most, but then I already liked him, but she and her band had the most life to them. Elbow have always been advert or background music to me.

I wouldn't say scrap it but maybe vary the style of acts for a wider audience. There are many new bands out there from all musical genres that could do with the publicity and show time. 

When was the last time we had a prog band, a classic rock style band or even a jazz rock band. Old genres of music i know but then again some of the material i've seen on the show recently has been done before.

I usually record it when i realise its on and if i don't like something then i fast forward it. I've come across a few bands on the show that i otherwise would never have heard of. Band of Horses being one of my favs a few yrs ago.

I find most live music worth listening too. That doesn't mean I can't crack up at some of the antics folks pull. Personally I am unsure what running round in your pants does - if you want to shock, get nekkid! If you want to entertain, put on a circus like Kiss or Madonna...

I think I've only, once, found a band totally unbearable, and that was Cornershop supporting Gong (I think) in the early 90s well before their success. It was just tuneless feedback and howling.

Nowadays with the punk bands it`s cos we`re all in our 50s/60s, so actually do need to go to the toilet 🤣

I have no problem with people not liking some music, its personal taste, it just seems that the Later with Jools thread is a place for people to come specifically to post about how much they dislike the show. Week after week. If I dont like something I dont bother with it, rather than bang on about how much I really dislike it.

Probably because at one time when we were younger we actually liked the show. With age comes a lack of understanding the  tastes of the younger musical generation.

Or its just the Victor Meldrew syndrome creeping up on us older chaps. "I don't believe it"

That sums it up, that feeling of not being amazed, surprised or shocked by anything new that comes along anymore.. 

But that's our / my problem, not the fault of any new emerging artists. They're just doing their thing, totally immersed in it as they should be. 

New genres do emerge though apparently - Drill, Grime etc, etc.. It's just that I haven't the faintest idea what they are about though and I've no intention of finding out either! 

It's all too shouty and loud for a low-end old codger like me; I like elevator/advert music apparently, as made by the wonderful band that is Elbow! 😁

I've been thinking on this today, and as far as I can tell, the last truly original new musical innovation was dance music back in the 80s/90s. Pretty sure Iggy did the dancing in your pants thing long before FNM and the Chilli's were around. Just because someone has done something before doesn't preclude anyone else from doing it. It's art, self expression and should be given the space and freedom to exist. The folks digging Slowthai have never heard of any of the pants wearing predecessors and wouldn't be interested if you tried to show them. That was 30 years ago and has no relevance to the youth of today.
