scarified
Some of you will get into this topic, others of you will hate it. However, we should all agree that for some inexplicable reason there seems to be a huge number of kickass bassists who are British. Who's at the top of your list ? I can easily rattle off 10 ... John Taylor Paul McCartney Steve Harris Mick Karn Sting Nick Beggs Pino Paladino Mark King Tom Jenkinson Lemmy .. and find 10 "also rans" too John Entwistle Tony Franklin Geezer Butler Chris Squire Roger Waters John Paul Jones Jah Wobble John Deacon Neil Murray Jack Bruce
Oscar South
No contest, Tom Jenkinson.
6stringbassist
I'd sort of agree with some of your top 10, but Lemmy and John Taylor...mmm, not really what I'd call 'great', Shouldn't Jack Bruce sort of change places with one of them ?. neilb
John Entwistle? An "also ran"? Your having a laugh.
Delberthot
Maybe JE is an also ran due the fact that he successfully threw a 7? Paul McCartney's a bass player? Who's Tom Jenkinson? etc?
Stingray5
'Best of' lists will always be subjective though usually good for an argument or two! I would widen the scope here by adding: - Percy Jones (Brand X) - Colin Hodgkinson (Back Door) - Danny Thompson (John Martyn a.o.)
bubinga5
I know tihis is opinion of course, and im prob ignorant of a few, but Pino is thought of by many as the best session's bass player, playing today..ermm Anthony Jackson said so..and i think so too... I can listen to his fretless playing all day long..he shows his true layed back form on Dangelo and Roy Hargrove playing..there are a few who will back me up on this forum for sure.. for his bass mind,. i dont think there are any better in the world. But i will say that Julian Crampton and Randy 'Hope' Taylor dont get enough respect,, these guys are in another world..

I can easily rattle off 10 ...[/quote] I'm going to be the miserable git and say "Noooo... not again". There aren't ten best bassists in Britain - it's just a stupid question and it actually diminishes the skills of all bass players. Put it this way, I think I can play anything Roger Waters played so that must make him a crap player (like me). On the other hand I can't touch Pino with a sh*tty stick so he's in with a shout. On the other hand I know loads of bass players, who 99% of you will never have heard of, who can - so where are they in the list? You need to come up with a Government sponsored scoring system for bass playing skill that everybody can be measured against. Then we'll know what we have to do

Adrenochrome
Phil is often referred to as being 'Irish' in the press etc (as are people like Shane McGowan) so not really a big mistake. As a celebration of great british bassists I think it's a fine idea. I agree it's tough to compare a flamboyant bassist with someone like Roger Waters who was great at supporting the song. Sometimes with these Top 10 type threads, they seem to be more about who people think is the 'flashest bass player' or the 'fastest bass player' or the 'best slapping bass player' etc, etc.. which aren't the qualities that would ever define 'best' for me. Most of the people mentioned already are great players, each in their own unique way and as a result they bring different qualities to the fore, which have helped to define and develop the role of the bass guitar or bass as an instrument in modern music..
