lowdown
A bit subjective all this, but.... Steve Pierce should not be overlooked http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea...iendID=66568208 Garry

6stringbassist
And don't forget Steve Lawson, looping aside he's fantastic, his solo playing is amazing to watch, he plays bass, rhythm and melody at the same time. Not everyones idea of great I admit, but I like to consider myself open minded when it comes to music and bass playing.

parker_muse
I never really appreciated Paul McCartney untill recently. My bass tutor has a big soft spot for the beatles so we often play along to some of their tracks. And with the later stuff, how he turned simple pop basslines into what he did AND sung... it's scary stuff.
db100
Dave Holland{double bassist} is acknowledged as one of the top bassists ever,i have my own personal favourites, but you guys need to diversify, open your minds to other genres, check him out on yotube and tell me if he dont blow your mind. Jase
Some of you will get into this topic, others of you will hate it. However, we should all agree that for some inexplicable reason there seems to be a huge number of kickass bassists who are British. Who's at the top of your list ? I can easily rattle off 10 ... John Taylor Paul McCartney Steve Harris Mick Karn Sting Nick Beggs Pino Paladino Mark King Tom Jenkinson Lemmy .. and find 10 "also rans" too John Entwistle Tony Franklin Geezer Butler Chris Squire Roger Waters John Paul Jones Jah Wobble John Deacon Neil Murray Jack Bruce
Most of the legends are "also rans" Ed Poole anyone? Tait
bruce foxton was pretty good, but admittedly not one of the best. still think he deserves a shout though.
Veils
For me, Alex James and James Leech are my biggest inspirations. I know they aren't technically astounding, but that doesn't matter.
Paul S
Roger Glover has to be up there for me - he has such a marvellously intellectual side to his playing as well as the 'direct for the bollocks' stuff. Uriah Heep's original, the late Gary Thain, also?
aceuggy
What about the bassist for Free, Andy Fraser I think. Is he British? I love his bass lines

MoonBassAlpha
I like some of the old players who, I think, moved things along in their own way, so I would have to agree with: Colin Hodgekinson (Back Door) Percy Jones And add: Leigh Gorman Whoever called Ed Poole - nice one! I used to know him a bit. Good player and a nice guy.
sgt-pluck
Anyone mention Norman Watt-Roy? Also Bedders, for nostalgic reasons... Pluck
nick
Maybe not the most technical or flashiest player, but Mani's certainly helped make the bass cool again & he is entertaining. For that reason, I'd also put Paul Simonon as a close second & possibly Peter Hook third. Edited December 30, 2008 by nick
Bay Splayer
what a load of bollox these lists are anyway regardless of who`s music you prefer, geezer couldn`t slap like king, king couldn`t match pino on fretless, pino could rock, but not in the same league as geezer....etc all IMO
