bass_in_ya_face
Just heard a copy of Bowie at the Beeb recorded in 2000 and it\\\'s nothing short of brilliant. What struck me was the fantastic playing by Gail Ann Dorsey. Her re-working of Ashes to Ashes is just fantastic and for me it\\\'s exactly what a bass should sound like. Makes me want to break out my air-bass, Alan Partridge style on the train this morning! clauster
'Tis indeed great. But that doesn't look like Gail on the bass. From where I'm sitting it looks like she's playing a white Strat and some crysty in a headscarf is playing the bass? Not sure though as I did have a lot of beer last night and I'm not 100% certain my vivion is back to normal.

She's obviously not 'a slapper'!
I really like this live album, some great versions of some of Bowie's best songs. I always thought Earl Slick was a great name for a guitarist! There's a great bit on the show when Bowie says "Earl Slick on guitar" and it sounds so cool - sorry, also an old Bowie freak here. One of the things I remember about this show was that it was the first time I was able to watch something on TV, see that there was a recorded version available, log on to the internet on a 14.4 modem & buy it from Amazon. It was delivered within 48 hours and the whole process was painless. At the time it seemed amazing but of course it's now everyday stuff. Geek99
I believe she's currently playing bass for Gwen Stefani (has done for some years) - saw her in concert earlier this year. She stuck to just two basses, a four string and a grey five string. Edited December 31, 2008 by Geek99

SJA
when Gail Ann Dorsey and Mark Plati swap bass & guitar roles in Bowie's band it's just to have a change- she can slap pretty well- see live versions of "the heart's filthy lesson". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6siuZChminw closeup at 1.20 and check out her singing Freddie's part & playing the bassline on "Under pressure" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNGQor3dED8 - now that's a feat of coordination! I watched that Gwen Stefani live show on 4music the other day, and GAD got a lead singing spot at the end of one song (presumably while the star went offstage to change outfits)- when you've got a voice like that you'll never be short of work. nig
If you find it on dvd let me know please as ie only got it on vhs, so an upgrade would be well handy, on this topic ive gotta say mike garson and sterling campbell play outta their skin in places, a very good gig on so many levels. afterthought...I loved the mike garson, gail ann dorsey, zachry alford, reeves gabrels line up, that fookin' rocked big time. There's also a clip on YouTube of Bowie & Annie Lennox doing Under Pressure and Lennox is nowhere near as good as GAD's vocal on this when you listen to them one after another! SJA
Bowie's last album Reality didn't grab me- but I've noticed the songs sound better live with GAD on bass than the recorded versions with Mark Plati & Tony Visconti on bass. I was really impressed when he did "Hello spaceboy" on Later in 1995- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu6PDuQ97tc (I think the drummer is also now in Gwen Stefani's band with GAD) - but then the single of it he released was the horrible Pet Shop Boys remixed version- urghh...
