Mike Posted December 31, 2008 Share Posted December 31, 2008 Hi all I opted not to do a thread this time as I suspected it would take the best part of a year (it has) and I thought it would get boring. So here is a fully condensed version! My 5 string was built to match a four Jon built me already. -33" Scale -Delano pups -Macasser board -Shuker EQ 3 band -Red LEDs Here she is! At this point, I felt it was darker than I wanted. Jon resprayed for me. So here is the finished product! If you fancy seeing more pictures, take a look at my gear porn thread. Strung B-G though I may be tempted with a high C in the future! 33" feels very comfortable and the B string seems very defined. Very nice tension, and a great sound. Surprised and interested about the shorter scale and low B, I thought you'd have to go the other way with a low B and get a longer (35"?) scale to suit the tension/tone better? Al - I know 35" is accepted as being better for 5 strings. But in my research, a lot of people put their faith in the skill of the luthier to get it right. I see a few top pros using 33" on 5 or 6 strings. Jon has done a great job with the low B, it's very firm and sounds great. I'll see if I can grab any more pictures. Mike's right, there's a bit of magic that certain luthiers can instil in their instruments to make them work. Fodera do a roaring trade in 33" basses with low Bs, CB Basses have even done a couple of 32" 6 strings with low Bs which worked great too so I'm told. Spent all last night trying to do my best Jaco Pastorius impression, first time I've ever had a bass that could get so close to the trademark tone.
