Al Heeley Posted March 11, 2009 Author Posted March 11, 2009 Just a scan from a photo in a guitar book, resized in photoshop then traced onto paper. Nothing fancy or clever really! Send me yr address, I'll put it in the post to you, i don't need it now. Cheers, Al Quote
Al Heeley Posted April 25, 2009 Author Posted April 25, 2009 The RickenBaker was about 95% finished, then it went on ice for a month while other stuff got done. Finally the nut is cut, the frets are filed and the trc is redone so that's about it really, and jolly nice she sounds, with that rick growl and woody percussive note, the both pup setting is particularly fruitsome. Mikey R Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 Very nice work - will this bass get an outing before being passed on to the customer... Quote
Al Heeley Posted April 25, 2009 Author Posted April 25, 2009 It needs a proper field test, thats only fair. Actually we have a gig coming up in 2 weeks and I'm on a plane to China, I think the plan is for Owen to take my spot on bass for this gig so it would be a somewhat fitting debut for her. Quote
wizbat Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 Nice to see you got this one finished. I was wondering what had happened, like maybe the evil egg had stolen it. Quote
peted Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 That's a brilliant copy you've made there. I'm sure there will be many-a-bassist who will double-take thinking it's authentic Quote
TDM Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 It looks amazing. You did a great job. Also, nice PRS. Quote
d-basser Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I was never a huge ricky fan but for some reason I am really craving one of your copies. Maybe white with black binding ala Bruce Foxton. Not that I have any pennies but what kinda cash are you looking for for these beauties? (PM me if you dint want to announce it to all) Quote
hookys6stringbass Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009
Ditto! I'd love one.
and me Al Quote
d-basser Posted May 5, 2009 Posted May 5, 2009 Haha there is a career forming if Ricky don't catch you Quote
allighatt0r Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 If they spotted this thread they would have plenty of evidence! Quote
Bassassin Posted May 20, 2009 Posted May 20, 2009 I think if they've let John Birch get away with it for 35 years... Then Al probably doesn't have much to worry about. J. Quote
Mikey R Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Hi Al, I was just reading back this thread and this post made me laugh:
...then I build a guitar in my garage or in the kitchen (if the wife's out)...
So true! Quote
lojo Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 Fantastic job, it has inspired me.. I am considering my first project, which may be a ric styled bass However at this stage would go for a bolt on purchased neck, so first project would be just body and hardware etc, and pehaps tackle necks in future years if all goes well! Warmouth do a paddle neck that is 8" by 41/2" and 13 degree, I may be able to cut the ric shape into that? (dont have ric drawings yet) Just to note I said Ric style, not perfect scaled copy, so I would be happy with the bolted neck What did you use for the binding trim? that feature is crucial I believe btw this is my first post, so hi all Quote
Al Heeley Posted June 8, 2009 Author Posted June 8, 2009 Hi and wwelcome to the forum. For the binding trim I use white plastic binding trim. Available from a number of guitar/luthier supply outlets online. I tend to use Luthier Supplies and Touchstone Tonewoods but you should become familiar with Allparts, W.D, Axes R Us and a myriad of others if you are to tackle a first homebuild. Good luck and post pictures! Quote
lojo Posted June 8, 2009 Posted June 8, 2009 Thanks Al Did some unscientific thinking today re: first build, sadly it looks like if I wish to use an off the shelf neck bolt on neck I will have trouble making a ric styled bass as the pickguard finishes so close to the edge of the body where it joins the neck, leaving no area in the body to make the joint Perhaps I should do a standard J or P for my first build, both I have to copy, as I said I wish to do everything except the neck first time round Sorry if this should be a new topic Quote
Mikey R Posted June 11, 2009 Posted June 11, 2009 Hi Al, where did you buy the binding from? Stewmac? Cheers! Quote
Al Heeley Posted June 11, 2009 Author Posted June 11, 2009 Never bought anything from Stewmac, my meagre salary does not support such extravagence. I got my binding from Touchstone tonewoods when I was buying the fingerboard and some fretwire. Quote

Merton Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 Mikey - if you buy from Touchstone let me know, they're just round the corner from me so I can go collect/kick ass/ask questions if need be Quote
