Pkomor Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) I'm making a bass for my As level design technology project in school. I would like some help deciding what body style to make, I have modelled 3 styles out of insulation foam (complete with contours etc..) pick your favourite! A ) B ) C ) Edited April 27, 2009 by Pkomor Quote
budget bassist Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) B definitely, i hate singlecuts, C is a bit strange... B is cool though, reminds me of a peavey cirrus or something Edited January 7, 2009 by budget bassist Quote
Al Heeley Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Can't we go for the one in your avatar? Quote
Starvolt Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 Gonna be different, and vote C. Why? Because I like it! Quote
rjb Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 (edited) I like A the most, especially if you drop the lower horn and contour back an inch to make the shape more dynamic. Edited January 6, 2009 by rjb Quote
BigRedX Posted January 6, 2009 Posted January 6, 2009 C is the most interesting because it's the least derivative. I'd smooth out some of the lines and make it a bit more curvy though if it was me. Quote
robert43 Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 Hi I would go B then C but no way A Thats my thoughts Quote
Adrenochrome Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 (edited) C is nicest looking, so I voted C. B would probably be the most comfy/ergonomic so depends what your priorities are. Edited January 7, 2009 by Adrenochrome Quote
Stylon Pilson Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 My favourite is B, but none of them really strikes me as jaw-droppingly beautiful. Sorry. S.P. Quote
d-basser Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 prob B but i would thin out the top horn, bit too chunky Quote
peted Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I'm quite taken by singlecuts at the moment, but I don't like them when the top 'bulges' before it connects with the neck. Your designs look very Sei-inspired to me. I voted B, but there looks to be a lot more surface area above the strings than below, does that make sense?!? Quote
neepheid Posted January 7, 2009 Posted January 7, 2009 I voted A - familiar but different at the same time. B looks like a giant Elvis impersonator's quiff. C looks like a Bongo with a growth coming out the side/end of it. A half made Bongo if you were carving it by hand. Quote
Pkomor Posted January 7, 2009 Author Posted January 7, 2009 Hehe Thanks for the replies! These are just basic shapes at the moment, adjustments can be made at any point really! Quote
tauzero Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 B for me too. I'd like to like singlecuts but they just look wrong (and I've owned a couple of Les Paul copy guitars, so it's not an utterly abhorrent concept to me). Quote
Buzz Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 B then C. Does no one else spot the resemblence of design B to one of the ACG designs? Quote
Pkomor Posted January 8, 2009 Author Posted January 8, 2009
B then C. Does no one else spot the resemblence of design B to one of the ACG designs?
Oops, not intended! Which one? Quote
henry norton Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Definitely B. A is a bit gimmicky and C is a bit BC Rich. I would have thought your Design Technology tutors and examiner would prefer a pragmatic approach rather than styling for the sake of it and B seems to tick more of those boxes. Don't get too practical though or you'll end up with a Warwick Thumb (AAARRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Quote
Prosebass Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009
C is the most interesting because it's the least derivative. I would straighten the pups up though as they throw the balance of the shape out , but hey that's your choice. Quote
tauzero Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009
Does no one else spot the resemblence of design B to one of the ACG designs?
A bit of a resemblance but not so much as to be a knock-off. It also has a bit of a resemblance to a Peavey Cirrus walking into a strong wind. There isn't a really vast amount of variation in shape available once you've determined that you're making an asymmetric two-horned forward-leaning bass, given the constraints that actually producing a practical usable instrument place on you (neck dive being a primary consideration, so headed basses have held back the evolution of the instrument enormously). BigRedX Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I find angled pickups incredibly ugly as well as uncomfortable for resting your thumb on when playing finger style, so unless there is a very good and provable reason for doing this (ie you can hear a significant improvement in tone with them at an angle) I'd go with them straightened up. (duh!) I will probably go for a single musicman style pickup any way! Quote
wizbat Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 For what it,s worth, how about shape 2 but with the top horn joining with the body again further up (just for fun and the fact it hasn,t been done before) so it makes a bigger semi circle in the cutaway line and forms a handle for easy carrying :-) Quote
Spoombung Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 It was a good idea to model them first. Nice to see that instead of a big spec sheet. 'B' is my fave. Quote
