molan
I've been offered some Elixir strings at under £10 for 4 string sets that I reckon are minimum 5 years old ( the box design is different from current ones). Never played & look in perfect condition to me. Can they have lost much in terms of brightness by simply sitting there unused for a long time? I've bought strings that were completely dead Chris
RayFW
Buy them and if they're completely dead slap 'em on ebay as 'perfect for getting the Jamerson sound'. Sorted.

High score
For the money, you should try them. Storage conditions are important but if sealed in the packs and never been on an instrument then they won't be corroded or work hardened
Paul Cooke
Warwick strings come individually vacuum packed... At least the ones I last bought were...

Merton
I have 5 sets of Trace Elliot strings which must be a good 10yrs old (when did Trace stop making strings??), still in their packaging and plastic-wrapped. First set I put on my cheap J copy has been perfect, so hopefully the rest are too. As said already, depends on their storage.

EBS_freak
AS a rule of thumb.... if they are covered in mould, they probably aren't in the best condition...
