Am I right in saying that some of the early viol family were fretted (early music)? Are there examples of fretted double basses around ? I saw one somewhere, but can't remember where - might have been at the Victoria & Albert museum. BassBus Posted January 11, 2009 Share Posted January 11, 2009 (edited) I spoke to Hilary James at a gig once. Even though she plays a mandobass her oppinion wasn't high on them. They were made very cheaply and as a result not many old ones have survived. The Bass Centre had one in stock donkey's years ago priced over £3000. I was told that was way over priced and just stick with a double bass. Hilary just uses it for the novalty factor and has come to be associated with it.
