Carvin / Marleaux BB75 custom made bass

A joint effort between me and eubassix.

This is a very special Carvin BB75 (Bunny Brunel signature) bass which has just been received back from Marleaux of Germany who have done a first class job of sprucing up the bass from its origional spec. Read on for the story!

I first owned this bass for a little while whilst at university - it saw a few gigs and some recording, and immediately struck me as a fantastic sounding and playing bass. However, after a few weeks the truss rod adapter snapped off, making it impossible to adjust the neck. The adjustment was via a male hex bolt which looked bent from the start. I put the bass out of active duty for a while and planned on having it repaired, because it was such a nice bass with a lot of versatility. At the time eubassix helped me out with finding my current 4 string and I sent this bass to him to have a look at and think about repair. It turns out it was origionally his before I bought it. After some time eubassix sent it off to Marleaux in germany who he/we have used before and rate very highly.

As you can see from the pictures, there is a brand new neck on tha bass which has been installed fantastically, really one of the best jobs we have seen. the fingerboard is in keeping with the beautiful origional birdseye finish, and there is now a Marleaux headstock. The original colour was impossible to remove fully from the deeper grains/swirls.. so the idea was to leave this and overlay the blue - to get a similar 'enhanced grain' (somewhat like F basses and PRS etc). We let Marleaux give the bass the full works - putting in a Marleaux type neck joint on the bass created some problems with the location of the J pickup and the job took some man hours but the workmanship is incredible, and the bass sounds deeper and fuller than before - I really think Carvin should look at using Marleaux necks in the future!

We left the electronics as they were as Marleaux agreed they sound very impressive in the bass - there is a coil tap for the MM pickup, a blend, voleme with push/pull active bypass and a very good 3 band EQ which I have the information on somewhere.

I am looking for a price of £799 for the bass delivered in the UK. Please contact me about the bass as eubassix is away for a while. If you would like any specific sound clips or pictures, let me know via PM or email and I will sort it out for you, otherwise the bass should be at the SE bash on the 18th Aug or you are welcome to come and have a play at my home in Oxford.

Thanks
ped

Thanks Ped - nice summary of the bass (currently) and its history + some nice photos - hopefully, this might find a new owner whilst I'm away: would have been a nice & unique fiver to keep, but not possible.

I'll try to find photos of the original bass and post them asap.

Should add, for those that might wonder, that the original idea was to replace the broken truss-rod, but the thru-neck was also warped and the only remedy was to replace with a bolt-on. There was a lot of work to be done: the original finish was tricky to remove/balance and the neck re-fit involved a lot of additional/one-off routing (including accomodating the J-pickup into the extended Marleaux neck) - I think the photos reveal what an excellent job they made of this!

Some specs: 34.5" scale (with zero-fret), 1.75" Nut, string spacing is 9mm (Nut), 16mm (24th fret) & 19mm (bridge). I forgot to note the weight but recall that it's very light at 8.25 - 8.5 lbs.

You can hear the origional pre-mod clips on my bass samples page here: http://www.frozencloudmusic.com/~chrishisc...itar%20samples/ This is a collection of samples from members of Bassworld etc and a few of my own. I think it could be a useful resource one day!

Cheers

Can I just say that Ped an Eubassix are great to deal with, having met up with Ped to sell him my Trace V4 and having bought a Modulus Jazz from Eubassix a few years ago. I've even just bought another bass (which used to belong to Ped!) from Eubassix this week, which should be in my hands very soon :)
