I'll have a listen to that later - thanks. There's only one similar solo album from Monk Montgomery - here's the title track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seXDmbF_ILo His last album was more straightahead jazz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd4_7p7es-Y Plus, of course, he's on some really early stuff, one of the first, perhaps the first electric bass recordings: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2h_BD2Wj7kU

visog
Back to the OP - for me Jaco was like a technical upgrade in bass playing from 16-bit to high definition: rhythmic subdivision and authority harmonic sophistication melodic phrasing and articulation tone and timbre It was a revelation...

Stub Mandrel
Well heavy Weather was one of the albums that convinced me jazz wasn't a complete waste of time (along with Birds of Fire). If you think Jaco only did crazy chops, listen to this for some of the most lyrical bass playing I've ever heard: I love Hejira too 🙂

I think it's a real signature of his that he went from root chordal / harmonic playing into melodic toplines and back, seemlessly. 'A Remark you Made' is a really fine example of that PLUS it's a really evocative title for a track. Bloody love it. And Joe Zawinul's piano solo is a fine demo of space awareness - knowing when NOT to play a note. I could go on...

This also check out interview with Joni discussing Jaco - she was fully aware of just how fragile and fractured he was mentally and emotionally but she tolerated extreme behaviour from him because she understood the genius of his playing and she knew without it he would not have shone as bright as he did Check out how this bass line drives the song - very accurate and well played cover
Dan Dare
Astonishing musician and player. Personally, er, difficult. Got him killed in the end. Sad.
Baceface
I'm not that into his solo stuff and can't really get on with the Weather Report albums he plays on. However, I think his stuff with Joni is sublime (as above). That said, my favourite Jaco album is Pat Metheny's debut, "Bright Size Life". (Oddly enough I'm not that into Pat's other albums.) It's a pretty straight-up trio record with Bob Moses on drums and it's just stunning. A widescreen, atmospheric, Americana-infused take on jazz with wonderful playing from everyone. I think Pat was 21 at the time and Jaco not that much older. Title track for those who haven't heard it: Edited November 11, 2019 by Baceface
