Roblevybass
Hi. My Musicman Stingray 5 has stopped working. On my last gig I just about got it to work by pushing the jack plug one way and taping the instrument cable to hold it there! My luthier suspects either a faulty input jack, faulty preamp or....?? The soldered joints on the input jack seem intact, and I put a fresh battery in. Does anyone out there have any experience of malfunctioning Stingrays? Any tips would be most welcome! Many thanks. John Cribbin
That sounds like a jack problem. If you're lucky, it might be dirt or corrosion on the contacts causing a poor connection. Best contact cleaner is Deoxit, expensive, but a small can will last a lifetime. If you don't have any cleaner, you could try some spirit on a Q-tip to disolve any gunk. From your description, I'm guessing the contacts in the jack have probably weakened and are not making good contact with the plug. Being an active, the jack socket is probably in a tube so bending the contacts may be difficult. If you need to replace the socket, make sure it's good quality, something like a US built Switchcraft.
John Cribbin
Oh, try another lead, just in case there is a problem at the plug end.
Roblevybass
Thanks, John. I tried another lead...same problem. My luthier cleaned the contacts, and still no joy.I will look at replacing the socket as you suggest.

Take it to another "luthier".
Roblevybass
Thanks, Jake I've just ordered a new jack socket unit from Strings And Things here in the UK. When it arrives, I'll get my luthier to install it....I have a suspicion that will work...
Samuel Burns
Take a look at the socket where the battery clips in. Maybe a wire is cut off.
