Si600
All working thanks to the aerial suggestions and the nice chaps at Quad who refurbished it after I found it languishing in the revered parents attic. No, I'm not spending thousands on a pair of period ESL speakers. I may look for some better ones than I am using at some point. There's a 303 in the back BTW Edited November 22, 2019 by Si600 More info added.
oldslapper
Oh man that brings back memories! I still giggle like an 8 year old at “Current dumping” Nice bit of Quad there.
chris_b
Lovely. I'll get my old Lasky's catalogues out for another burst of nostalgia.
bassintheface
I've got an awesome Quad 606 power amp with 66 preamp and 67 CD player running through a big pair of Tannoy D500's. From around 1994! It still rules. I'll upload a picture later

I used to go to laskys in Tottenham Court Road every Saturday , sampling their amps and wharfedale Airedale speakers 🙂
Count Bassy
Though my amp, CD player and turntable have kept relatively up to date, my main speakers are still a 1973/74 pair of Goodmans Havants that I bought new at the time. Pretty sure that they're crap by modern standards, but I'm too tight/nostalgic/confused by the options to replace them.
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
👍 I notice you have good speaker wire there also . Looks like qed. 79 strand ( apologies for wearing the anorak 😼)

I have a pair of Goodmans Magnum SL's (bought from Laskeys in about 1974) upstairs. My son used them for his hi-fi system up until last year. bassbiscuits
I've still got my Sony hifi from 1997. Works perfectly apart from one tape deck button that's broken, meaning i can't do mix tapes for any members of the opposite sex I might be trying to pull. Hasn't really been an issue... KevL
Nice old Quad kit, it's good that Quad are still around and are happy to service it, makes a nice change to the throwaway culture of today. Full marks for knowing that it is good stuff and is worth keeping and getting it running again. Yes, you'd probably benefit from some better speakers, keep an eye out and you can pick up something decent for not much money - a good tip is to look on the usual websites for someone local to you who is looking for collection-only. You don't need to go mad and get some mega-expensive speakers but it would be worth putting them on stands rather than on the shelf and up against the wall as with your Aiwas. Apologies if you know all this, it's just worth getting the most out of things. Old hifi can sound great and just keeps going. I'm writing this whilst listening to radio (2, Steve Wright - sorry...) on a 1970 Leak Stereofetic in its wooden case, through a Rotel RA-820BX amp and some Mission 731 speakers. My other system is an early-1980s Systemdek II turntable (the 'oil rig'), a Rotel 930 amp and some 1976 KEF speakers. All picked up for not a huge amount and still sounding good. 1
