Beedster
I'd say it's 1. Not original and 2. it's authentic, which is different. Peter
Nice distinction
Hamster
It's got to be #1 - As it came out of the factory.
chris_b
....'All original'. What does it actually mean....
In this context I think that "all original" means the bass has nothing added or removed and has all the same bits on it that it had when it left the factory. This includes the wood, hardware, electrics and paint.
evilLordJuju
I'd still say all original if a minor part was replaced with an IDENTICAL period part. By that I mean bridge covers, knobs, tuning keys, truss rod covers etc. The phrase "all original" could mean any number of things. What I find funny are the basses that truly are all original (but generally knackered) and the obviously non-guitar playing seller apologies for the missing original string... swingin8th
I would say numero uno. unchanged with the exception of strings of course. too bad there's no way to check the milage.
Tried to set up a poll here but it doesn't seem to be working. So 1. As it left the factory (excluding strings I guess)? 2. All parts verifiable from the same year of manufacture? 3. All parts verifiable as from the same era? Given that there seems to be considerable variability in how the phrase is used (especially among USA ebay sellers), what do you think? If the first option, how is this verified? Thanks Chris
peted
All original should mean that the bass hasn't been modified since it left the factory (save for setups and new strings) A bitsa bass can consist of all original parts, but I don't think it should be advertised as an all original bass. birdy
All original should mean that the bass hasn't been modified since it left the factory (save for setups and new strings) A bitsa bass can consist of all original parts, but I don't think it should be advertised as an all original bass.
I agree with this. Almost everyone who is selling an old bass says 'All original apart from xxxxxx' where xxxxxx is a list of things that have been altered. If the bridge has been replaced with one of a similar age it isn't all original anymore its all original with a replaced period correct bridge. Even a refret constitutes not all original or any solder joints broken in my opinion.
