henry norton
My ten year old son is starting to take an interest in playing bass but my precision is too big and heavy for him. Bearing in mind he might get bored of it fairly quickly, can anyone recommend a lightweight short scale bass that doesn't go for Guild Starfire type money? It's not super light though, they're not that much smaller in terms of bulk than their long scale cousins.
tombboy
Harley Benton Beatbass. The Hofner copy. Very light, 32" scale (I think) and very playable. Funky looks too. lemmywinks
I think dangerboy was selling a short scale for £80, give him a shout. Looks a beaut!

They were quite flavour of the month for a while - I seem to remember that several people from these boards (or the earlier incarnations) bought one after glowing recommendations from others. henry norton
Thanks for all the replies but can I get hold of a Bass with the hollow body of the Hofner copy and a 30" scale (he really has small hands) HN
Musky
As far as I know the Beatbass has a 30" scale. A quick search reveals Acidbass has got one, so maybe you could drop him a PM to check.

When he outgrows it or gets bored or takes over your P, you'll still have a pretty cool bass.
rjb
There's also a second hand shortscale Encore P for sale here.... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=35673
lozbass
I'd keep a look out for a Danelectro Longhorn (reissue) - they're extremely light (hollow-bodied and about 4-5lbs), very playable, and a 30" scale.
henry norton
Sounds good - I like the idea of the longhorn 'cos if Junior gets fed up with it I wouldn't mind taking it on.
lozbass
Absolutely, I love the look and the longhorn is really good fun!
