My ten year old son is starting to take an interest in playing bass but my precision is too big and heavy for him. Bearing in mind he might get bored of it fairly quickly, can anyone recommend a lightweight short scale bass that doesn't go for Guild Starfire type money?

+1 for the Bronco - I picked up a Bronco for £50 delivered off eBay and it's a perfectly useable bass. It's not super light though, they're not that much smaller in terms of bulk than their long scale cousins.

Harley Benton Beatbass. The Hofner copy.
Very light, 32" scale (I think) and very playable. Funky looks too.

These were the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of the thread. They were quite flavour of the month for a while - I seem to remember that several people from these boards (or the earlier incarnations) bought one after glowing recommendations from others.

It does indeed.... my bad.

+1 on the Dano. When he outgrows it or gets bored or takes over your P, you'll still have a pretty cool bass.

There's also a second hand shortscale Encore P for sale here....
