Just wanted to say I followed up a recommendation to take my new Gibson Thunderbird to Chris McIntyre in South London to get it set up correctly (Gibson poor set-ups etc ,etc, etc....) and he did a great job in getting everything right and lowering the action. He filed down the nut which was the cause of the problem and sorted out everything else too. Very pleased with it though - the neck is perfect for me especially now it's set up properly. I know I will end up playing my cheaper Jazz copy most of the time, but the Thunderbird is fun to play and his it's place. Anyway - go and see Chris for a perfect set-up or even a new bass! I found him absolutely impossible to get hold of, never picked his phone up and when we did arrange a time for the setup he wasn't there. And I'm not a great fan of Strats but I had a play on one of Chris's versions while waiting for him to perform magic on my bass. It was superb -- low action? There wasn't any. A quick edit in reply to Toad -- I rang on a Friday, took two basses in on Saturday morning and he did them while I waited. Sorry to hear you had problems. The neck dive is always talked about and seems some notice it and others, like me, don't. The Gibson has the strap button on the back where the neck becomes the body (ie where your neck screws are on the bolt on neck Epiphone). Don't know if this has always been the case on these Gibson models but looks like a better position than your original botton. The only thing I might do is put on strap locks.
