pete.young
If you had 200 quid or less to spend on a pair of nearfields, what would you buy? Old basschat threads seem to indicate that the Tascam VL X5 was highly rated - it appears to have been replaced by the VL A5 so any comments on that are welcome. The Tapco S5 also looks like good value - anything else I should be looking at?
Stewart
Yamaha MSP-3 perhaps? Also the old Samson range were quite good, but I haven't heard the new ones.
BTGAndy
I have a pair of Alesis M1Active 520s, they do the job. They cost me £140 and have a fairly flat response, I've had some really good mixes out of them that have continued sounding good on crap systems! Computer music have a nice article on the accompanying DVD about buying monitors, whack something in google and I'm sure there will be a few articles too. Best thing to do would be to go and have a listen to as many as you can.
Fraktal
I bought these ones several years ago: http://www.thomann.de/gb/alesis_m1_aktiv_monitor_mk_ii.htm If you plan to spend a lot of time listening them, dont buy anything else. Those are by far the less "ear-fatiguing" monitors I have ever tried. I did an extensive research that took me approx. 3 weeks visiting all sound studios and friends in my city to compare all possible different brands. I tried everything from cheap Samsons to insanely expensive Genelecs and all those reputed standards as the Yamaha NS10, Event, D.A.S., Red Devils, etc. but when I heard the Alesis Mk1 I had to buy them. Perfect for loooooong mixing sessions without headaches or ear fatigue.

Toasted
I have a pair of Mission 750LE bookshelf style monitors in cherry that you're welcome to for, say £100? I could deliver this weekend, depending on distance. Edited January 21, 2009 by Toasted
