Pre amp / Power amp rig advice

Just as an update to previous post, here’s the Trace / QSC budget lightweight head (“The Bomber”), unfortunately ended up paying new for the rack case (£55) so total - £295 all in.
Will be trying it out in anger next weekend; initial impression is of a huge-sounding, crystal-clear Fender Bassman.
Of course it may blow up! ;)

 • 8 months later...

Pre/power just dawned on me as an option - I could have access to a Yamaha P5000S power amp, a very good power amp by all accounts, and from my experience with them.

How would the likes of a Hartke VXL Bass Attack (which I currently have) or an Aphex Bass Xciter serve as a pre-amp?

Or even a multi-FX unit?

What brands of speaker should I look at? Should I be looking at the same cabs as I would be if I was buying and integrated bass amp like the Peavey Tour 450 or Warwick ProFet 3.3?

Just starting on this line of research/enquiry, so forgive any dumb questions . . .

I think the Hartke pedal will be OK as it has a DI. I think I have heard of someone else using one as a pre-amp with great results.

I use my Vbass which is sort of a multi FX unit as a pre-amp and it's great (and it does stereo), so I think anything with a level DI out will be OK.

Cab-wise it's the same as if you were buying a head and cab solution from any other company. Once you have your poweramp/pre-amp sorted you could take it to a shop and try some out.
Sorry to hijack, but from what I've read, any power amp (even a dj one) will work great with a bass pre-amp? Specifically, the BBE BMAXt?
Essentially you are correct, any power amp will work but some power amps are better than others purely from their design and the quality of their components. What is a DJ amp btw? :)

That :)
That's just a poweramp (funnily enough I recently sold the 1200w big brother of that eBay model, to a fellow BCer) but yes essentially DJ's etc. just use exactly the same poweramps as band PA systems, bass players etc.

These are one of the best kept secrets IMO - http://www.technicalhifi.com/cats.php?cat=27

1u, really light, cheap and great. I got an 800w one from eBay for £90, Kiwi got a 1600w one from eBay for £150ish (ours both look the same as the top one on that page, with the light strips, but mine is silver and 'unbranded'

If you search for 'Technical Pro' on eBay you might strike lucky. You can but from the US too, because they are switchable voltage.

Prices look good for what they appear to be but they are a bit cheeky giving the model designation the 'peak' power number. Just seen the 1700 watt jobbie on ebay but it is actually 415w @ 4 ohms!
