Mykesbass
Had this on in the car and was really grabbed by the feel of this track. Can't work out what is making this such a tasty groove? Pretty sure it is mainly down to the drummer, but what is making it special? (of course you are welcome to disagree that it is)!!
Linus27
Generally, I'm going to have to disagree with you (sorry, you did say it was ok to) but I think in the verses, it's that funky rhythm guitar under the straight tambourine. The rest of the song seems a bit bland to me. 2

gjones
The snare is just behind the beat. Which gives a laid back feel. Some drummers I've played with have no idea how to play behind the beat. They obviously don't listen to soul or blues. It's a difficult skill to master.

cheddatom
It's the tambourine surely! Take the tambourine out and it'd be a totally different groove

cheddatom
I play drums in a pretty heavy band. On the last album there was a song with a riff, which was pretty good, but there wasn't anything really taking the lead in the mix. We put some nice lead guitar on it but it still didn't feel right. I suggested tambourine and the other guys laughed at me, until they heard it. Obviously it'd be out of place on stage at a metal show but on the album it really works

chris_b
This music works because of syncopation. Get 3 good rhythms going and interlocking and there you have it. Listen to Betty Wright's Clean Up Woman and Bobby Patterson's How Do You Spell Love. They get it exactly right. I don't know why, but while I really should like the Dap KIngs, I never quite get there.

mikel
As hinted at before its micro timing. Get it just right, and that means the whole band, and you get an irisistable groove. Its not what you play its the way that you play it.

Ry Cooder Good Thing Betty Davis Anti Love Song As has been said, if the timing is only a little bit off the groove evaporates.

Everything in the song works. Blue

A drummer I sometimes play with tends to play ahead unintentionally, which makes things sound rushed. I try to pull back a bit, but he notices it, what he does is slow down... and I just have to stop trying or we'd end up going really slow. He's been a drummer for decades, so I can't find a way to approach this. I am the new guy, relatively, so I just go with it. It's difficult, but when you play with someone who gets the whole playing behind the beat etc, it makes me sound great, I love it

Or you can play waaaay behind the beat, as in this Muddy Waters Song. Edited December 11, 2019 by gjones
