Guest BeardyBob
Mmmm... I listened to Deftones's'ses's White Pony for the first time in YEARS the other day Such a beautiful album for a 'heavy' band, Chi Cheng was solid & amazingly tasteful. RIP you lovely man you x
RockfordStone
alter bridge's brian marshall i think is underrated, as with creed beforehand, he and the drummer really have a tight rhythm section to allow mark tremonti to do his guitar hero thing. by no means flash, but he is a really solid player imo

miles'tone
Ozric Tentacles - Roly Wynne. In my opinion the guy was a bass playing genius.
Cat Burrito
In most genres the bass is a very underrated instrument so there are no doubt thousands of examples. The guy from U2 is always slated on here & whilst I'm not personally a fan, I think his playing suits the band. They'd sound really odd with Flea playing. Twincam
Some good posts in this this thread. And whoever mention the bassist from prefab sprout good shout. I shall add. Frank Maudsley from A flock of seagulls And from other underrated bass players threads Tony Butler is a fine player, Big Country is a fairly underrated band. Low End Bee
Andy Warren, ex of Adam and the Ants and the Monochrome Set (also hugely under-rated..)
Yep. Also the most miserable looking bassist ever live. Not a criticism though. Works in context.
AndyTravis
Stefan Olsdal - Placebo. I know he now switches around on guitar, but he's amazing and his sound on the first two Placebo albums is fantastic.
DaytonaRik
The Union - a collaboration between Luke Morey (Thunder) and Peter Shoulder (formerly of Winterville). The Most Excellent Chris Childs (also of Thunder) takes care of bass duties superbly.

Ben Jamin
Roy Mitchell Cardenas of 'Mutemath' I think these guys deserve a lot more recognition - lots of energy, so much so that the drummer has to gaffa-tape his headphones to his head. They're all a bit crazy but he somehow manages to hold the thing together. Can't go wrong with a P-bass! Here's one of their craziest live ones. Try their albums - there are some really great grooves. Darren King's an amazing drummer too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQHHRBsTc7I
spectoremg
+1 for Dennis Dunaway! And the consummate musician, Mike Rutherford - there aren't many Genesis bass lines you can use twice! And for not being snobby about his machinery (Shergold/Yahama).
Pinball
I saw Cardiff bans Ghosts As Alibis in Bristol this year and really liked the intelligent bass playing and their sound moves around. Check this vid out at about 3.20 and you will see what I mean. The guy had a great tone on the night and the rhythms were spot on. A very enjoyable band https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YE0Jfh0A90
funkgod
I don't know about Simply Red, but Moloko's Mark Brydon used to play bass and may have played on their tracks. Fine Geordie lad there - always did like that band. funkgod
While reading this and looking at my cd collection my eyes dropped on all the Nils Landgren cds i have, nearly every one he has done, thinking about it one of the reasons is not just the great songs and outstanding playing by all, but the bass playing from both, Lars Danielsson and magnum coltrane price ( isn't that just the best name !) both capture great playing that sit well in the song without overdoing it, unless asked. I love listening to Lars Danielsson play he has so many great ideas they just flow out of him ( check out nils landgren's version of impressions, as well as his own stuff) and while magnum coltrane price is a different type of player, he is more from the school of on the 1 funk, i equally love his grooves as much. So while i would not ever underate the band i am surprised not many have heard of him or the bass players. so my vote goes to Nils Landgren's funk unit and players Lars Danielsson and magnum coltrane price. great playing guys. here ya go a random one of each,,, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2AyvrJlxzQ&index=1&list=PLyJSP1YmT5P7A5wCXWoakEvXNlz71gD1v https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQg7uLZwUSI
