Annoying Twit
What a great idea for a thread. Since I'm unlikely to buy anything soon, it gives me an excuse to look on ebay and post listings. Over and above trying to be the first one to find the truly weird stuff. Here's a Stagg BC300 plus tuner + strap for £134.99 plus £14.99 postage. Damn pity they listing for the bass alone at £159 isn't there any more. Delberthot
loads of stories about these - one of which being that until the Japan factory got up to speed with manufacturing parts they literally shipped US Fender parts over there and had the workers there put them together. Early JV0*** serials had the large Fender, small Squier logo They were produced at a time when Fender was beginning to get its act back together after the all the, mostly, woeful 70s crap they produced. I've owned an early JV13** Precision and a slightly later SQ series one but failed to see what all the fuss was about. the only thing I could see that i liked was that they had the rolled fretboard edges. And so on - as i said, loads of stories. there's a JV Squier website as well somewhere but i can't seem to find it.
warwickhunt
Yep I've owned a couple JV basses (inc big Fender logo) and they are comparable with a good Fender BUT sometimes imho people get carried away with the collectability and price! At the end of the day you could say that they are a very good Fender bass (never heard of a duff JV) but that is all they are; a good ('possibly' better than the genuine Fender of the era) Fender bass guitar. So what would you pay for a decently fettled early 80's Fender? To me that is about the value of a JV Squier UNLESS you are a collector. budget bassist
I honestly don't see what the fuss is about with all these fenders. To me a squier vintage modified jazz is a good bass, and paying £800 for a VERY similar passive bass with a simple JJ configuration just doesn't make sense to me when you could have something far far better. Actually, strictly speaking they didn't stop production at all as a handful were still being turned out during the move. Fuji Gen didn't really have to go all out to show what they were capable of as they'd been doing that for years - many of the parts that turned up on JV's were in fact identical to those fitted on their Fender copies, so Fender were in fact just one of many companies using their services. I'm a little dubious about the 'Fender US parts' story (or at least in as far as that Fuji Gen did little more than just assemble the things) as real evidence seems to be negligible other than the use of US pickups. Unless anyone would like to clue me up.

Was a bit light headed when I tried it lol but I was pleasantly surprised by it, it was everything I had hoped it would be. I went back a few days later & played it again, it sounded even better sober lol so after going away & thinking about it for a bit I went back & bought it. Fender does seem to get knocked a lot, I'm well aware that they do make the occasional dudd but owning my MIA jazz & having owned a MIM before that for 5 years I've had nothing but good experience with them. With an older Squier I'd deff say they are at least 4 times better (in my experience anyway) but I haven't tried the new VMJ's etc that everyone is giving such good reviews. Anyway back on topic...
