So i thought, rather than have a million different threads saying 'oo this is too expensive', i though it would be a good idea to have 1 thread were various links could be put in to overpriced items that don't warrant a seperate thread.

So il start off with this wonderfull boss metal zone: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Boss-MT-2-Metal-Zone...%3A1|240%3A1318

What a great idea for a thread. Since I'm unlikely to buy anything soon, it gives me an excuse to look on ebay and post listings. Over and above trying to be the first one to find the truly weird stuff.

Here's a Stagg BC300 plus tuner + strap for £134.99 plus £14.99 postage. Damn pity they listing for the bass alone at £159 isn't there any more.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/STAGG-BC300-ELECTRIC...ents_Guitars_CV

Does the amp, stand, and gig-bag really justify £164.99 plus £10p&p for this Encore bass?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Encore-Bass-Pack-EBP...ents_Guitars_CV
Anything our german friend has for sale (A LOT!)
Squier jazz bass for £1350?

Rockbass streamer standard £349 + £20 p&p

Does the "glowguard" on this Tanglewood Rebel bass really justify a price of £249.99 + £15 p&p?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tanglewood-Rebel-Bas...ents_Guitars_CV
I thought that would be about going rate for the wonderful JV series.
THere seem to be many examples of people buying JV precision basses of similar vintage (and from Japan) cheaper here: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...ision+Bass/10/1

Can't see a review section for JV series Jazz basses. Would they be very different in price?

I had the pleasure of playing a JV Jazz around 5 years ago (wasn't mine though) and it was sublime. I'm not 100% sure of the full story, but I believe that the JV series were being produced at a point in time when Fender USA weren't producing anything, hence the Japanese guys really went all out to show the world that they could match their USA counterparts. More gen'd up fellows on here may correct me as I heard this story a while ago, and it may have vital details missing, but I do know that the JV series guitars and basses are revered by top players, and again, the one I played was superb.

PS, sorry to kind of move off the price subject guys.

loads of stories about these - one of which being that until the Japan factory got up to speed with manufacturing parts they literally shipped US Fender parts over there and had the workers there put them together.

Early JV0*** serials had the large Fender, small Squier logo

They were produced at a time when Fender was beginning to get its act back together after the all the, mostly, woeful 70s crap they produced.

I've owned an early JV13** Precision and a slightly later SQ series one but failed to see what all the fuss was about. the only thing I could see that i liked was that they had the rolled fretboard edges.

And so on - as i said, loads of stories. there's a JV Squier website as well somewhere but i can't seem to find it.

Yep I've owned a couple JV basses (inc big Fender logo) and they are comparable with a good Fender BUT sometimes imho people get carried away with the collectability and price! At the end of the day you could say that they are a very good Fender bass (never heard of a duff JV) but that is all they are; a good ('possibly' better than the genuine Fender of the era) Fender bass guitar. So what would you pay for a decently fettled early 80's Fender? To me that is about the value of a JV Squier UNLESS you are a collector. ;)
I honestly don't see what the fuss is about with all these fenders. To me a squier vintage modified jazz is a good bass, and paying £800 for a VERY similar passive bass with a simple JJ configuration just doesn't make sense to me when you could have something far far better.
welcome to the madness that is Vintage world

No feckin way!

It's one of those narrow ones that cuts into your shoulder with the sliding buckle to enable it to get longer as the gig goes on. Exactly what you don't need for a heavy instrument like (to pick an example entirely at random) a Music Man.

Fender USA didn't stop production until the move to Corona in '86. Actually, strictly speaking they didn't stop production at all as a handful were still being turned out during the move. Fuji Gen didn't really have to go all out to show what they were capable of as they'd been doing that for years - many of the parts that turned up on JV's were in fact identical to those fitted on their Fender copies, so Fender were in fact just one of many companies using their services.

I'm a little dubious about the 'Fender US parts' story (or at least in as far as that Fuji Gen did little more than just assemble the things) as real evidence seems to be negligible other than the use of US pickups. Unless anyone would like to clue me up. ;)

"NO PARTS included"? You'd expect a little more for two and a half grand. ;)

Admittedly i haven't, but i've never been enthralled with any jazz i've ever tried (mexican jazzes, VM squier jazzes, reggie hamilton jazzes, the jazz bass 24), and i just can't see how a USA jazz can be such a significant improvement on any of them so as to warrant such a high price. To me a passive jazz bass is a passive jazz bass, and honestly, after my brief stint with my reggie, if i wanted one, i'd buy a squier. Fair enough if you like the sound or the feel of the things, but i just don't think that a USA jazz is 4 times better than a squier vintage mod.

A very nice amp, but the last 2 have gone for well under £1k.

I tried a MIA at GAK back in December, was on my 21rst birthday, had gone over to Brighton to do a pub crawl etc & stopped off there beforehand. Was a bit light headed when I tried it lol but I was pleasantly surprised by it, it was everything I had hoped it would be. I went back a few days later & played it again, it sounded even better sober lol so after going away & thinking about it for a bit I went back & bought it.

Fender does seem to get knocked a lot, I'm well aware that they do make the occasional dudd but owning my MIA jazz & having owned a MIM before that for 5 years I've had nothing but good experience with them. With an older Squier I'd deff say they are at least 4 times better ;) (in my experience anyway) but I haven't tried the new VMJ's etc that everyone is giving such good reviews.

Anyway back on topic...

I don't get why he does it, browsing recent pages of his feedback shows no one is stupid enough to pay what he's asking & yet he still lists these things. I understand about raising price expectations but it must be costing him money to constantly list the items.
