Cat Burrito
I'm sorry to hear that. It does sound like there were issues in the band anyway so you probably dodged a bullet longer term. I don't think anyone would criticise you for not playing that show. They fired you = a problem for them. Presumably they did that having considered every possible outcome so it's not an issue for you to not do it!?! 😼 If you stuck it out for 4 1/2yrs, you must have been doing something right.
dave moffat
Bit of a bummer, far as I can see they've fired you, so they can shove the gig up their @rses sideways without lube. Hope you find a decent, better band soon. 2
lemmywinks
No way would I be doing that gig unless there was a suitable fee involved. The only choice would be to tell them now or on January 1st which would depend entirely on how petty I was feeling.
Woodinblack
No, there is no way I would do it. Seems odd they kick you out with no backup before an important gig, sounds like they might be imploding. however, I would really like to go for all of Franks ideas!
BrunoBass
Thanks for all the comments guys, makes me feel a bit better. I was on a huge downer last night. We’ve been through a lot since I joined in summer 2015, and the way they’ve handled it just leaves a bad taste. I’ve decided not to do the gig. It’s their problem and they can fix it. When I asked them what they were going to do they both looked surprised, as if they hadn’t considered the possibility of finding a new bass player. Weird... unless they have a replacement already lined up. Oh well, onwards and upwards... (Incidentally, I suspect they’ve forgotten that I run all the social media accounts and am the only one with the passwords 😏) 4
jezzaboy
The other band members aren`t the brightest are they? They should have waited until after you had done the gig then sacked you! No way would I do the upcoming gig for them. I`m surprised you manged to last this long with the drummer being a right moaner. It does my head in that does.

dmccombe7
If they had any sense they would have raised the issue saying the band are moving in a different direction and they didn't think it suited you. At least raise some concerns that possibly could be addressed. I find it odd that this came out of the blue. Most musicians know something isn't quite right with a band and can sense an on-coming change of some kind. Obviously not in this case. If they had gone down that route and still asked if you could do the gig you might have been more acceptable. For me i would have simply said no. If you leave under those circumstances rather than you deciding the band isn't for you then i think its a slap in the face to you and your abilities. Let them worry about the gig. The fact the band seemed to be doing well surprises me as well. Why split a band that seems to be working. 2 gigs a month is about right for me and i'd be happy with that. Time you looked for a new band i reckon. Walk away and let them get on with their own mess. Dave

I guess that means you can write your own version of what went down and ridiculing the other members. Dave

Cuzzie
Send me - I can barely keep in time even if I know the songs and will definitely fail to learn the set, but will bring a monster amp and turn it up to 11 so it will sound fine
Newfoundfreedom
I don't mind depping it, as long as they cover my travel expenses. 😂 (I live in Bulgaria)

miles'tone
Well done for not doing the gig. I certainly wouldn't want that weighing on my mind over Christmas and New year. You will find another, better, gig soon I'm sure. Good luck!
dave moffat
Write them off as old news, enjoy the break over xmas/new year, fresh start, onwards and upwards, it'll work out OK maybe not in the way you expect but as the aussies say 'she'll be right' just keep an open mind.
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE
If it were me , I wouldn't have told them I'm not doing the gig . I would've just ignored any contact with them and moved on . They're history now , Enjoy the chase to find your ideal band .,
DJpullchord
Why did they sack you? See it as an opportunity to do something fun and new. And line the three of them up and fosters in their faces.

TheGreek
The temptation to just not turn up on the night with them expecting me to would have been unbelievable....childish I know, but... Teebs
20 hours ago, BrunoBass said: Our drummer called a band meeting for tonight; he said it would only be a quick one but he wanted to see us. I’ve never met a musician so apparently disengaged with music. Everything about the band bores him, he moans about every aspect of band activity and I’ve wondered frequently why he bothers to do it. Anyway, my assumption was that the meeting was to inform us that he was leaving the band. No. The meeting was to inform me that I’m out of the band. It came out of nowhere and I’m pretty stunned. I joined them four and a half years ago and in that time we’ve gigged pretty much twice a month since. We’ve always been tight, we’ve always been popular locally, it’s always been fun. We’ve had our ups and downs but we’ve always had a good working relationship with each other. I say ‘working relationship’ because I have no social relationship with the other two members, it’s a purely professional but amicable arrangement. Or was. I feel the drummer is the prime mover behind my ousting. We had a bit of a ‘didn’t see eye to eye’ situation over something a few months ago. He later apologised and we moved on. Or so I thought. He did all the talking tonight, the guitarist / singer / frontman kept quiet, even though he’s the defacto band leader. They both then started chipping in with other ‘reasons’ why they want me gone: we’ve drifted apart as people etc. We have a gig booked for the first weekend of January. It’s a multi band lineup ticketed gig, with us headlining. It’s sold out, 400 tickets. I was really looking forward to playing. Having just fired me, they then asked me if I’d still play the gig. It took every ounce of will to remain dignified and not tell them to **** off. I think they’ve underestimated how difficult fishing for a new bass player in our small local pond will be. So, I’m ‘single’ again. If I’d have left the band of my own accord I’d have done my best to maintain cordiality and try to remain on good terms with everyone. But the way it’s happened and the way it was handled leaves a bad taste and inevitably some smouldering if not fully ablaze bridges. I’m off to have a few beers and think about what I want to do next. I feel pretty down about it and I don’t feel like a bass player if I’m not in a band. Really sorry to hear that BB - they sound like b*stards Defo sabotage the gig! 👍
Skinnyman
I'd play the gig, personally. Making sure that we had "a last drink together to toast our farewells and no hard feelings". I'd anticipate a decent laxative kicking in after about 40 minutes so one would need to time it so that things get interesting about third song in...... Oh, and a few minutes after sound check and before showtime with a spanner to detune the drums, alter the throw of the kick pedal, smear vaseline on the guitar strings and generally make sure that whatever they tried to play sounded awful. So I'd deffo play the gig. But then, I'm not one to hold a grudge, me. No sirree. 2
AndyTravis
Go to the gig as a punter with a better looking, younger band. Make a big fuss out of every joke and make sure you’re in their line of sight all night... 4
