Mickyk Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 When I first picked up a Bass back in 83 I promised my self that I would learn Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke, well after a 35 years abstinence ,I was still promising myself I would learn Sir Duke, and so after 3 or 4 years I still haven't managed to learn Sir Duke.? any tips anyone. Slow it down to half-speed (or less, if need be...), and learn to play it at that speed, following either the notes on the stave, the TAB or the audio, depending on the medium used. Once you're really comfortable at that tempo (and not before...), increase by a bit (50% becomes 60%, for instance...) and get it down 'pat' again. Increase again, and repeat until 110% is reached. You should by then be perfectly at ease playing it at tempo. Hope this helps; it's a good bass line to learn, and so well worth the work put in, which will serve for many more tunes. Yep. Play it slowly - as slowly as you need to to play it properly. Don't play along in time, to a metronome or the tune. in fact don't worry about timing at all until you have the notes and fingerings right. If you slow down on a difficult part that's fine, it's more important to practice it properly than to repeatedly play some parts incorrectly because it's too fast. And enjoy the process of learning, don't worry about nailing the whole song, that will come naturally in time. 1 Quote

Leftfield choice … I’m learning Surrender by U2 - it has slap, harmonics and a good finger style groove also and is not over-challenging to my very out of practice fingers. Great line though. I found Jailbreak really hard to sing and play. Easy bass line but just those half beat notes catch me out. Quote

Still if it gets me match fit again, it’s all good. I got my ring finger tip crushed by an over zealous workmate. He said I wouldn't be going to the medic with that. I said there's no way I can hide it. Had to get the pad of my finger stitched. It was agony. Upshot is when I play guitar or bass and slide, I get pain in that finger. It's still tender a year later.
