budget bassist Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I'm thinking about selling my tobias and my current amp head (running an ashdown EB180) which should give me £400, enough for a decent used head i think. I've seen markbass LMII heads going for that much and they seem really good, i've tried the jeff berlin combo a couple of time and it sounded really good, but how would it sound in the mix for metal? I'm after something really punchy that will cut through and really bring out the growl in my warwick and musicmans. Any other suggestions? I was also thinking something along the likes of a GK 700RB-II, an ampeg SVT-3 pro or an ampeg B-2R, B-2RE or a B-1RE. Also, would any/all of the above sound significantly better through my ashdown MAG 115 and 210T cabs until i can scrape together enough money to upgrade them too? Quote
Delberthot Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 You can;t go wrong with a GK 700RB. Bucketloads of power and growl coming out the wazoo. You'll get a good one second hand and have money to spare for birds and Thunderbird. Quote
Stan_da_man Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 The GK heads are good. I was after an Ampeg-ish sound from my Peavey but instead of buying a valve head, I just bought a Blackstar overdrive which has a valve in it meaning I can get pretty close to the valve goodness. Go GK/Warwick/Peavey. Quote
budget bassist Posted January 26, 2009 Author Posted January 26, 2009 Ok thanks for the advice I'm still really leaning towwards a little mark II though.... any idea how it sounds in the mix? Quote
RussFM Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Definitely go for the GK, you can get a new one for £399, way better value than the Ampeg. I used to have the B-2R and it did me proud for a couple of years, but I couldn't believe how much better I sounded through the GK. A much clearer tone, way more volume to play with. Quote
ahpook Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 good head for metal ? one with horns ? sorry....couldn't help it. i'll be off now Quote
budget bassist Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 I was waiting for something like that Quote
Dread Bass Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I had a mark bass head an sm450 i think it was called. It was a good head but i found it a little to polite for metal. I switched to my current head an ampeg svp and power amp and i was much happier. In fact PMd Quote
budget bassist Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 Thanks for the PM dude, i was actually going to ask you what you used but i forgot! Quote
Dread Bass Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Dood uses a mark bass head and really likes it though. drop him a pm Quote
waynepunkdude Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Good head for metal? OK it's a deal, here's some metal. Quote

This has just enough warmth and growl for me (I'm playing mostly blues & soul). Only just enough though. Chris Quote
Musky Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 You could always take a punt on the new GK MB2 - there one on ebay atm http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gallien-Krueger-MB2-...emZ250360582896 Quote
alexclaber Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I'd be inclined towards the GK heads, they have a brightness in the highs and a growl when pushed that works really well for cutting through dense mixes. Alex Quote
cetera Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009
My tip - buy a Sansamp BDDI
Agreed, buy anything powerful (SVT3, GK etc) with plenty of head room... then put a BDDI in front of it. Or.... check out a second hand Tech 21 Landmark 300 or 600 Head.... Quote

umph Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 second hand sound city / simm watts / laney / carlsbro. Anything from the 70s with atleast 100watts will get you great loud tone Quote

Then you use the firsbass crossover to split your signal into another amp. Quote
BassBalls Posted January 28, 2009 Posted January 28, 2009 I have used a peavy fire bass at pretty much every rehearsal studio i have been too (probably testament to how rock solid they are) and they sound great for metal or heavier stuff. Sansamp is also a great idea. I think i read somewhere that the bass player from Killswitch Engage has his own one and that he sets the EQ on every rented head they use on tour flat so he can adjust his tone via the Sansamp so he can get a consistent sound. budget bassist Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 Hmm, all good ideas, i was thinking about a sansamp Quote
