drTStingray Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 SBMM have announced quite a few new items for NAMM but this caught my eye - pretty colours as well in daphne blue and Olympic white. https://intl.sterlingbymusicman.com/pages/stingray-short-scale 2 Quote
dannybuoy Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 (edited) Perhaps it’s like the rotary switch on the Jack Casady Bass? Or something similar to the Cave Passive Pedals circuits... I have one of their overdrive pedals, no battery required! Edited January 16, 2020 by dannybuoy Quote
obbm Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 (edited) I've been waiting for this. I wonder what the differences are between this and the USA version apart from the price. Edited January 16, 2020 by obbm Quote

I wonder what the differences are between this and the USA version apart from the price. Same as the regular Stingray Ray 34 I'd guess. Quality of tuners, maybe other hardware and the fact it's made in Asia. Otherwise probably similar enough to not notice, if you're on a budget. Not sure they do the oil and wax neck finish neck on these and the Ray 34. Re the passive boost, people on Talkbass have described it as like running in a 'cut' mode (though still powerful enough) on normal and the boost gives you enough to stand out where necessary (eg a solo). How it's achieved have been discussed at some length esp on Talkbass. Quote
therealting Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 @drTStingray So it’s really more of an attenuator that gets turned off rather than a boost? Quote

Yeah I think so - best way to check (I think it's basically the same as the full fat MM version in that respect), email EBMM customer services and ask them in respect of the Stingray short scale. scrumpymike Posted January 16, 2020 Posted January 16, 2020 I like this! Anybody know about pricing? Quote
solo4652 Posted January 24, 2020 Posted January 24, 2020 (edited) £700: https://www.projectmusic.net/sterling-by-music-man-short-scale-stingray-olympic-white-27216-p.asp?gclid=Cj0KCQiAyKrxBRDHARIsAKCzn8wDJQCK03LsSZQfToJ8PjganTvhsTpMkI8gPSoYl28eX561AE8tr54aAidzEALw_wcB Edited January 24, 2020 by solo4652 1 1 Quote

anzoid Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 Bass Direct is going to be doing them at £650. I've just put down a deposit on one in Daphne Blue. NBD to follow sometime towards the end of March if all goes well. Quote
Trueno Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 That price sort of puts them in the desirable zone. 1 Quote
BassApprentice Posted February 19, 2020 Posted February 19, 2020 Oh, £650. I was intrigued by the full fat Ernie Ball Short Scales but at this price I'm very tempted. I wanted a no frills short scale and this could sort that right out. Quote
CameronJ Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Very smart if these do turn out to be in the £650-700 range. Should sit nicely between Fender’s Player and Vintera Mustang prices, as well as being competitive next to Schecter’s new Banshee bass. Quote
Trueno Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 I'm trying to fight the GAS for another short scale. But I have to say that if I was considering a Vintera or AP Mustang... I would also be seriously thinking about one of these. Quote
BassApprentice Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Unless you really need/want that Fender tone, I can't see why this couldn't have a space in a short scale collection. I can't think (happy to be proved wrong) of a readily available short scale with a single humbucker. 1 Quote

The Cort Action Jr has a single humbucker and is a surprisingly good short-scale for the money. On mine I upgraded the tuners and bridge to Hipshot products and it is a very nice sounding bass - the upgrade to a KickAss bridge was definitely worthwhile, made the sound much more focused. 1 Quote
CameronJ Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 G&L had better be about to release a Tribute version of their Fallout bass if they hope to compete in this short scale melee. Quote
burno70 Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Seriously tempted at that price range. Quote
solo4652 Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 Blast - it has a 38mm nut. No good for my clumsy great paws. Why is it that P-width necks seem so rare on short scales? 1 Quote

Why is it that P-width necks seem so rare on short scales? If my memory serves the old Fender Musicmasters had a 40 or 41mm width. The Squier Vista series Musicmaster certainly did. Just measured my Hofner Club, sat next to it, 43mm across the nut. Quote
solo4652 Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 I actually have a Squier Vista Musicmaster! Quite a clangy, middy tone - and that's fine - but, I'm looking for a classic P-tone short-scale bass to complement it. Quote
Paul S Posted February 20, 2020 Posted February 20, 2020 What about the Harley Benton PB- Shorty - 42mm at the nut. Supposed to be half decent. Quote
