P-T-P
I've downloaded IE8 (Release Candidate 1) to my office computer to check that our sites work as they should with what will likely be the first full release of the new browser. Just an FYi for you guys here, unless basschat.co.uk is added to the IE8 RC1 compatability mode, adding new posts (and presumably replying etc., I will check) doesn't work. Once you click on the "Post New Topic" link, the page starts to load but then as IE8 tries to correct the code, it all goes a bit wrong and you get a blank page. As I understand it, the idea is that IE8 will take code from older web pages and interpret it in such a way that it displays in accordance with current standards. Clearly this isn't working with basschat.co.uk There is a compatability view that allows the code to be interpreted the normal way. It can be activated from the "Tools" menu. Either click the unchecked "Compatability View" option, which will add basschat.co.uk to the list of sites using the feature, or select, "Compatability View Settings" to open a window which gives the option of displaying all sites using the compatability feature. Not sure whether the root cause is the code on these pages or the new IE8 features, but just thought you should be aware as it's expected that the IE8 RC1 I am using is expected to be the first formal release of the new browser so you may get a few people encountering this problem depending on how they set-up these options during install. Tracer
IEBlog Not sure if you've seen this yet - and I admit that I haven't really looked into it too much (standards compliance Nazi here, so we should be alright ; ) - but it seems to be saying that you can force IE8 into quirks mode from the page using various combinations of DOCTYPEs and a new META tag. But yeah, might be worth a glance.
Buzz
I suspect it's IE8 being sh*t quite frankly, as there's a number of standards compliant browsers (FF, Opera, Safari I think, etc...) that work just fine with the boards. Sounds like a return to the days when you had to have two sets of code in a webpage, one to handle IE and it's quirks and another for everyone else. Machines
The problem will affect all boards using this software in that case. I'm sure updates will be released and applied as the need arises - which will be some time.

hubrad
Hmm. I'm stuck with IE6 as I use Win2000 Prof - nice and stable but lost support from MS. They're pulling support from WinXP in a while.. anyone think that'll give them time to iron out all the Vista incompatibilities? Plucking up courage to switch OS to Linux or just get my hand deep in my pocket and buy a Mac!

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/syste...quirements.html Vista will never be fixed. When Windows7 comes out I expect M$ will try to erase the memory that Vista ever existed like they did with WinME.

A lot of organisations are going to be reluctant to move off it. In business terms, there's no advantage moving forwards (in fact, there was probably no advantage in moving to XP from 2k) as all the flashy bits don't actually enhance productivity. Machines
My work PC is lumbered with IE6 - freezes on a lot of websites. I could stick Firefox on but there's software auditing.

They got shouted at by big businesses after Fista failed to be a viable update and there was no problems with XP.
Alastair
People still use Internet Explorer?
Machines
Most people do. I think IE has at least 75% market share. The average web user doesn't care about enhanced browsing features, they are more likely to just want to update their facebook and go on eBay. Buzz
Why?
IE (in various incantations) is full of holes, runs scripts, like activex etc..... Free porn sites are notorious for hosting nasties (not always directly, can be via adverts and such, inc popups). Just use the profiles function in FF or Opera (or any other browser) and run things like the NoScript extension. Granted, I've yet to find a way to directly access the profiles in FF3, but it was there in FF2.
