EliasMooseblaster
I believe they developed an 8-string in the '70s - John Entwistle played one of the prototypes on The Who's Success Story. Whether it made it to market, I don't know, but I think it was based off the 4005 design. In any case, this sounds like quite an exciting development! Cat Burrito
I'd love an 8 string 4005 but that isn't going to be cheap!
Maude
Ooh this looks interesting, although John Hall has said that RIC will never put the 4005 back into production we can still dream.

That has to be the least inspiring video I have ever seen of a bass, everything from the back office setting through the poor sound quality and technique through to his apparent disinterest, all make for nothing more than a strong reinforcement of what a lot of bassists think of Rics, and frankly what a lot of guitarists think of bassists :) 3

If I'm not dreaming, could there be hope for a 4-string 4005 on the horizon? And man, that is one stupidly ugly headstock, and I LOVE Rics. Is RH setting out to destroy the business?

It’s an archived bass. They have their own little museum. that bass needs to stay there. Only the headstock ruins it as it’s good looking otherwise

And yes, otherwise the 4005 is about as desirable a bass as it gets for me.

Curvy loveliness. Al Cisneros isn't exactly a bass player's bass player; the weak, clean sound and aimless noodling belie the monolithic riffage he can put out, but even that is a niche taste. Ah, poo! I saw the hang-tag and got all full of hope! I'd have preferred some monolithic riffage to that aimless tinny fret masturbation

It’s usually referred to as the potatohead. Just so’s you know. I first saw one about 40 years ago. 😉
4000
FWIW, as someone stated above, there’s not likely to be any more 4005 basses while JH is around. He really doesn’t like them and refers to them as tuna boats. I’ve only ever played one. It was ok but the bridge pickup was too near the bridge for me. My 4003s8 on the other hand was awesome. visog
Looks like the same headstock design as Mr Squire's...
AndyTravis
Affectionately known as the potato (I’m sure I read that somewhere)
AndyTravis
Although if I bought a potato and it looked like that, I’d ask for my money back.
Lozz196
An 8 string bass, great, 5 strings to not play rather than just the 1.

It works like a 12 string guitar in the sense that there are 2 E strings, 2 A strings etc. So from what you say, you's only be avoiding the 2 Gs. Jean-Luc Pickguard
My first reaction on seeing the video above was that grabbing a random homeless man off the street and thrusting a bass into his hands is no way to get a decent demo.
BreadBin
Some of the posts in this thread serve to prove that one shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. Al Cisneros is part of a pretty elite group as Ric have only ever released five signature model bass guitars - he is number 5.
