Help!!!! Any Fender Jazz specialists know what this is?

Hi all, in a fit of enthusiasm last night I bought this

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sunburst-62-Fender-J...A1%7C240%3A1318

Described as 62 jazz bass I knew it wasn't a reissue as it doesn't have the stack knobs. I assumed it was just a very pretty late 1990s/early 2000s Jazz with a few embellishments at an OK price. It has a Corona California neckplate which dates the body to 1998+. I spoke to the seller beforehand who assured me its a US model.

However he has subsequently told me there is no serial number on the headstock and has sent a pciture of the heel end which has a May 1962 date stamp on it.

What on earth have I got here? All help gratefully appreciated as its not been posted yet and its probably not too late to cancel the deal if it turns out this is not what I hoped it was.

Just had a quick look at the photos on the listing.

It may just be me along with the few glasses of wine Ive had but I aint happy with that neck as a genuine Fender. The headstock itself looks an odd shape, the logo is not right to me and the heel of the neck,(near the body at the back) seems an odd angular shape for a Fender.

I sincerely hope Im wrong!!!

Here's a picture of an actual '62 date stamp:

The size of the stamp on yours differs, although I don't know if this is common, but the one thing I would say is that the number relates to what it was, eg the 7 in my picture means it's a Jazz Bass......so what's a 12?

Also the fingerboard on yours looks a lot chunkier, with a different size/shape truss rod screw

Dubious in my opinion, but I'm no expert...

Thanks guys I am getting nervous here ;)

If this had been a US mongrel (MIA late 1990s body and MIA reissue neck) I would have been fine but the date stamp is what got me worried. I am now worrying that I have got a generic Jazz body with an added Corona neckplate and fake Fender neck

Cancel the deal.

Either the seller is an innocent victim selling the bass on unaware of it's origins, or it's a deliberate - and poor - attempt at fraud.

The truss plug is MIM (or MIK, even). Or maybe not even Fender.

Ah... this might answer the question:

So.. it's blatant fraud.

One to report to eBay and Fender, I think...

It would appear that's what you've got to me!

The more I look at the shape of the headstock....looks weird, could just be the angle I guess!

If he's saying that it's a full on '62, then you should get your money back based on that alone, none of that hardware is from anywhere close to that era, the body is a refinish at the very very best, but probably a generic jazz, and the neck and stamp seems dodge!

If it was me, I would pull out!

Si

Edit: WoT got there before me. Looks like some rubbish he's put together then, seeing as the 'customiser' listed it himself

Thanks guys - just spoke to the guy and he has agreed to refund. He is a guitar (rather than bass) specialist and I think he was inncoently selling on a faker that had been sold to him

Posted (edited)

Glad you got a refund mate! ;)

but I'm sorry, any guitar 'specialist' will know the basics of vintage basses also! I'm into vintage basses and as a result I know a bit about vintage strats etc, they just go hand in hand!
If he genuinely thought it was a '62, why was it only £400?

Anyway, glad it's sorted

I would like to think he was an innocent victim here - the listing you linked to is explicit in stating its not a real Fender (Quote: Please note this guitar is not a genuine F****r guitar, and you are NOT bidding on a F****r guitar.) Whereas the listing I fell foul of says nothing of the sort

BTW, he has agreed to refund ... but not done so yet. I think he is an honest guy, from talking to him, so hopefully the money will come back to me soon. As a back-up (in case of ebay/Paypal dispute and my trust in human nature being misplaced) I have sent him a message through the eBay system saying thanks for agreeing to refund as the goods were not as described.

Hmmm, its up on eBay again, described as a Mexican Jazz bass now

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sunburst-re-issue-62...A1%7C240%3A1318

In case anyone wondered how the saga ended, he accepted a "best offer" of just £220! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sunburst-re-issue-62...A1%7C240%3A1318

Why accept an offer within 12 hours when the B-I-N was an apparently more reasonable £299? Seems he was in a real hurry to offload this.

I am now leaning to the more negative view of this guy ;) So glad I got my money back
