petervfunkster Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 hey My akai deep impact after about 20 minutes bypasses the effect even if the effect is turned on, it just plays a clean tone and the input signal is not reading ? has anyone else come across this problem? P Quote
Kiwi Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Problems with the power supply perhaps? Is the power socket detaching from the PCB, causing momentary blackouts and resetting the pedal? Quote
crez5150 Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Are you using the Akai supply that came with it.... I tried to run mine from a different supply once and it caused all sorts of weird problems.... went back to the Akai one and they disappeared Quote
alexclaber Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 I too noticed that the Deep Impact does not like to be run on other 9V supplies (I think the Akai power supply might actually be 9.5V?) Alex Quote
Toasted Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 I think I've got an AKAI PSU. I don't normally go in for "this 9V is better than that 9V", but in the case of the AKAI there seems to be some kind of black magic. Quote
petervfunkster Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 cheers folks for the speedy response! you may all be right - I bought mine on ebay so it came with the american akai power supply and Im using a boss 9V, I'll see if I can source an AKAI PS P Quote
petervfunkster Posted February 3, 2009 Author Posted February 3, 2009 another question - is using a different power supply thats 9v potentially damaging to my deep impact? Quote
cheddatom Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009 Can't you plug the american psu (with an adaptor) into the mains? That should work. Quote
Kiwi Posted February 3, 2009 Posted February 3, 2009
another question - is using a different power supply thats 9v potentially damaging to my deep impact?
If your power supply is one of those multi voltage selector jobbies, sending 12v into the pedal by accident might give it a bit of a hangover. Is the LCD display showing partially lit sectors? If so, this would suggest a short has happened somewhere. Quote

That should work.
Only if it's a regulated SMPS which I don't think it is. I've had two Deep Impacts in my time and although it's a while since I sold them I do recall there being something unusual about the PSU voltage, I think that it was closer to 10V than 9V and due to the digital circuitry the pedal had a habit of freaking out when run from a lower voltage 9V supply. Great sounding pedal, horrible reliability issues. Alex Quote

But I do know I have several AC-DC convertors that have american plug on and I just put an adaptor on the end. Am I risking anything? In particular two laptops and a 9v DC pedal supply. Quote
petervfunkster Posted February 4, 2009 Author Posted February 4, 2009 so.. I got the original american AKAI power supply that came with it, and after a minute it cut out with a smell of smoke! disaster! The deep impact itself is fine.. It seems to be working now with the BOSS 9V power supply, I was daisy chaining it with a distortion previously so maybe that was the issue? I know the korg microsynth manual specifies no daisychaining.. Quote
Toasted Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 Let me see if I can find my AKAI PSU. If I can you can have it for free. I'll PM you in the next few days if I have it. Quote
Rich Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I lost my Akai PSU in my last house move, so I've been using the PSU from my old Digitech BP80, which seems to work fine. It doesn't like any of my other 9v PSUs though. Verrry strange. Quote

eshears Posted February 8, 2009 Posted February 8, 2009 I've always used my Deep Impact with a Godlyke power supply and have never had problems. I did have a smiliar issue though with the effected sound cutting out. I had to have some broken solder joints resoldered, and it's worked fine ever since... Quote
