Bilbo
I have just seen that Pat Metheny 's wing man, Lyle Mays, has passed away due to a 'reoccurring illness'. 66. No age. A massively underrated talent whose work I have enjoyed for decades. Edited February 11, 2020 by Bilbo
visog
Me too! Loved his first two solo albums. PMG work was fine too. 'As Witicha Falls' a particular highlight of his. And let's not forget the bass connection with Jaco as part of of Joni Mitchell's Mingus back-up band with Pat, Mike Brecker and Don Alias.
Bilbo
I always think of his synth playing as some of the most organic and satisfying I have ever heard. It sounds 'real' not synthesised, if you see what I mean. 1

mangotango
Yep, a real tough one to take in. He hadn't been playing with PM, or indeed anyone for a while, and there was inevitable speculation.....had they fallen out? Had Lyle lost it and become a recluse? And always at the back of the mind, the prospect of something like this. I saw the PMG several times and have many of their albums, and let's not forget the remarkable Shadows & Light by Joni Mitchell. All of those have formed part of my listening for several decades now. Much sadness here. Edited February 11, 2020 by mangotango
Stingray5
Just heard about this from me mate, @mangotango, and am equally as saddened by the news. RIP Lyle.
toneknob
Sad news. A previous band featured his and Pat's 'Phase Dance' in the set, always a high moment.

Bilbo
Key synth. Its the way his sound integrates into the ensemble sound. It's perfect. Edited February 11, 2020 by Bilbo
Passinwind
RIP. I saw him play many times and it was a joy every single time, from tiny club dates with the PMG to an arena show with Joni Mitchell.
Piers_Williamson
Lyle Mays was my introduction to Jaco (literally) https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=joni+mitchell+shadows+and+light
