spectoremg
I've tried and tried with this album and I still I can't see what people rave about. Is there a backwards subliminal message saying 'mention this at dinner parties and other guests will think you're really good at music'. Please tell me. 2

oldslapper
You don’t like it. That’s ok. There’s loads of “classic” stuff I don’t get, no matter how hard I try. I’m not sure there’s anything to “explain” that will help either. Edited February 18, 2020 by oldslapper
chris_b
Don't worry. There are many bands constantly being lauded on here that I don't get either. I bought Aja on CD, mainly for Chuck Rainey's playing.
Happy Jack
Traditionally speaking, the 'good bits' are Peg, Josie, and Deacon Blues. Whether or not you like any of those is, of course, another matter. It's worth bearing in mind that Aja is NOT the best album by Steely Dan, not by a long chalk. The easy winner is a late-period double album called (IIRC) The Best Of Steely Dan. 4 1
AndyTravis
I like it a lot. Heard it years ago when dad went through a big SD phase. Rediscovered it after the “Classic Albums” series was repeated on Sky Arts. Lovely. But it’s mad cheesy - all Steely Dan is 😋
Beedster
There are so many albums that to me are nothing more than the emperor’s invisible clothes. People in the know have suggested that I ‘try’ to like them. My Mum used to say the same about spam, suet pudding and homework. I rest my case

Reminds me of the classic Steve Coogan...... ”What’s your favourite Beatles album?” ””The Best of the Beatles” 2
ezbass
If you're an SD fan, then Aja is a great album, if you aren't, then that's always going to be an uphill battle. I like Aja, but my favourite SD album is The Royal Scam (except for the greatest hits of course). 6

Frank Blank
I love Steely Dan but Aja is far from their best album imho.

casapete
Only the early SD stuff for me really (Reeling ITY etc) - when they started getting too clever and 11th chords everywhere then I got bored. Playing so good but oh so sterile IMHO. ( And please don't mention 'The Nightfly' or I'll really lose it....)
NickD
It's all subjective innit. I really like it, But Gaucho is my favourite SD album by a mile, which a lot of other people don't rate.

I generally like stuff that sounds 'live' and prioritises feel over perfection, which is mainly why the more recent SD stuff ain't for me. Realise I'm probably in a minority though, most musicians I know love SD.

cetera
I love Aja.... and all the other original Dan albums.... it's just Gaucho that leaves me cold. So sterile I feel like I've been dipped in an antibacterial bath....

Shakedown Street? The track, not the entire album…that's a funky Dead song (and great fun to play).
