Jack
Hi guys, Planning a board that's going to be Wireless (Shure GLX6D) Boost (TC Spark Mini) Synth (???) Vintage Fuzz/OD (???) Modern OD (Cog Knightfall) Preamp (Sansamp paradriver) Because of space restraints, either of the as-yet-undecided synth or olde worlde fuzz will have to be mini-sized. Does anyone have any good suggestions please? I've had the Joyo Orange Juice before that I quite liked, so that's a contender. Any others? EDIT - Only one needs to be mini as long as the other is roughly boss-sized. Edited February 28, 2020 by Jack
Al Krow
Synth: Bananana Matryoshka. BUT it depends whether you want something small or something that is going to deliver you usable synth tones? If the latter get a Boss SY-1 or SA C4. Fuzz / OD: COG mini 66 (I'm guessing that may too close to the COG Knightfall? If so, I'd be tempted to swap out the Knightfall for the mini 66 and use the extra space for the SY-1 or C4). The one thing I don't want to do is sacrifice good sound for size, I'd rather buy a bigger board. I should have mentioned that only one needs to be mini sized, the other can be roughly Boss-sized. So something like the the Matryoshka could work with a bigger fuzz or vice versa. I've also just seen that the newer Knightfall is a dual OD. Does anyone know how different can they be made to sound? Can I have one side modern and grunty and the other fuzzy and vintagey?
Bo0tsy
The Matryoshka is definitely usable as a mini sized synth IMO. If you crank the Out2 yes it gets pretty out there, but dial back on Out2, dial in the Out1 and add some Blend and there's some great sounds in it. There's a distortion setting too, though it's pretty synthy, glitchy sounding. Amazon are selling the Bananana pedals now too, so if you don't like it you can always send it back
dannybuoy
If you do decide to get an Orange Juice again, shoot me a PM - I have one that has only been used 5 minutes from new! You lump fuzz/OD together, but they are rather different. For a thick heavy fuzz I would recommend the COG Tarkin and the SFX Micro Fuzz (now seemingly out of production, but email Max at SFX or post a wanted ad on here). I am lumping them together and I'm not meaning to. I've had and enjoyed both in the past and I'm aware of the differences I'm just not explaining myself well. What I really want is something that mimics a vintagey, Marshall guitar amp turned up loud type tone. We do a couple of Who tracks and a few other oldies that benefit from a distorted sound that doesn't have extreme highs or lows but has plenty of snarl. On the Helix I use a Marshall guitar amp and 4x12" set to overdrive into oblivion to achieve that. On my new Fender combo I use the HiWatt model. That's the kind of sound I'm after. dannybuoy
In that case an Orange Juice would fit the bill, although there are quite a few similar pedals from the same range - the Golden Face one is a Marshall and I've heard it also sounds good on bass: https://www.joyoaudio.co.uk/joyo-guitar-effect-pedals/jf-300-mini-pedals/
lee650
Zvex do a synthy fuzz in a tiny 1590a enclosure! The Fuzzolo I've never tried one, but I'd imagine it's a less featured version of the mighty Mastatron😁
Jack
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I may revisit this thread if my new plan A doesn't pan out, but I had a eureka moment a few days ago and picked up a used MS-60B on here. That should cover the occasional 1-or-2-song-effects and leave plenty of room for the important stuff as well.
Quatschmacher
@GisserD what are the dimensions of your compact Future Impact housing? (Obviously it’s by no means a 1590a but it’s a lot of synth in a relatively small box.) Edited March 8, 2020 by Quatschmacher
