How’s this one going?  I’m excited to see the end result!

Excited to see a Taiwanese Kay bass. 😂

Go on then, a sneaky peak. 😁

I ended up putting a black line on the neck as well because the white binding got lost against the cream/beige paint. I've got a load of flatting and polishing to do tomorrow.

This little lot are all ready for flatting and polishing tomorrow, then rebuild time.

I'm not really sure what to do about the bridge yet. It had a generic replacement fender type bridge on it which was 19mm string spacing and was pulling the E and G string outside the fretboard towards the body end. I reckon 18mm should sort it as it'll be 3mm tighter but I can't find a suitable replacement, the only cheap 18mm ones are far too modern looking. I have a vintage fender style with the threaded saddles so it's possible I might be able to hook the strings in the thread slightly off to counter this, or cut new grooves to give me 18mm. The problem then might be that the entire saddle assembly will just slide across on the baseplate as it's not grooved like some are.

Maybe have a look at a Bronco bass bridge - think the spacing on those if 17mm and it should look about right for this.

Cheers

Thanks, I'll look into them. 👍

Thanks @Jabba_the_gut, you're right the Bronco Bridge is 17mm and it looks the part as well. Only problem is I can find one anywhere, it doesn't look like anyone sells them.

It appears it's a pretty universally unliked bridge and gets changed for a standard BBOT for the four saddles rather than the Bronco's two, so you'd think there'd be an abundance of old ones for sale, but nothing. I'm happy to live with the two saddles as this is only a bit of fun, so if anyone knows of one for sale let me know please. 🙂

All polished, as with the Longhorn, this'll be getting a ceramic coating and a buff before rebuild but here's an idea of the pearl in the paint.

The side view, it's so skinny 😁

That is an awesome finish.  It’s gonna look so cool when it’s done!

Thank you.

I'm pleased that the colour when it's not catching the light is quite similar to the stained wood colour it was originally. I want it to still retain a passing nod to its former self.

It's all back together and almost set up. I've used a threaded saddle type fender bridge fixed in the old holes and it has intonated just fine, so I'm not sure why the previous owner said it wouldn't. I've used a threaded saddle type so that I can pop the strings over a touch to give a more suitable spacing, but as I thought, that tends to pull the saddles outwards when playing. I have plenty of height adjustment so I'll cut a groove in the saddles where the strings need to be and then make a groove in the base plate (some have this anyway) for the height adjustment screws to sit in to stop the sideways movement. It's not a huge amount but it's annoying. The trussrod was out of adjustment but a washer behind the adjuster nut fixed that and has pulled the neck back nicely. The nut which was a righty, then cut for a lefty, now being used as righty again, is now sitting higher due to the coats of paint on the neck so the slots will need filing down which means I can file to the correct size and not have to replace the nut, again it's not a lot but will bring the strings down and hold them in place again. The action is pretty good at the moment and once the nut slots are sorted it will play nicely. The tone pot does practically nothing so will be replaced at a later stage. All in all I'm quite happy as, although it needs a little fettling, it is going to intonate properly and play decently with a nice low action. I've also picked up a suitably cheap looking strap which fits with the look.

I forgot my favourite bit.

I've never liked those plastic 'top hat' type volume knobs but I saw some bronze ones on ebay and turned up this morning. They are a perfect fit for the colour of the bass and look suitably tacky. 😉

That looks bloody brilliant!  Reminds me of my mates £2k Gretsch 6 string!  Really awesome transformation, we’ll done 👍🏻

That'll make him happy if you tell him his 2 grand guitar reminds you of a Kay bass. 😆

I'll take the complement though, thank you. 🙂

How does it sound? My ancient Kay 'SG guitar ' looks ghastly but sounds great.

It's got brand new rounds on and the tone doesn't work so it's bright but it sounds great, still has that short scale thumpy fundamental. It has that Danelectro kind of sound. Once the strings wear in and I fit a new tone pot I think it'll be great fun.

Deffo a complement - if you ever move it on, I would request first dibs please 😁

It'll probably be a never sell bass as it's just not worth anything, but never say never and I'll bear you in mind. 👍

Without a lie, one of the best refinishes I've seen.  Top class.

Wow, thank you Andy. It means a lot when someone with your eye for detail makes a remark like that. 🙂
